Forums - Gaming Discussion - Valve’s Dan Ginsburg: “Not much reason to ever create a DX12 back end for your game”, Praises Vulkan

I think PS4 & Nintendo "NX" should get Vulkan.

Hopefully developers should focus on Vulkan.

Steambox's were looking like the only really viable alternative. linux gaming is too fragmented with far too many issues, OS.X has too small a marketshare to be a primary target for devs and the other platforms don't have the power or support to currently challenge desktop gaming. really most devs are still targetting DX first, OpenGL just hasn't been able to keep up, only time will tell if this iteration will be different.

You really should get your eyes checked if you still can't see the support for Windows 7, 8 and 10. That's much, much better than what DX12 offers. I can't find a single reason to move from my Win 7. If they allow me to keep getting the best effects on this system and have all games 100% compatible, I won't switch in years.

You might need a pretty big reality check if you think most games will be vulkan based in the next few years . Even if it is completely successfull it will be long after win 7 is dead and buried that the majority of games will support vulkan. once out of support it is extremely unlikely they will be releasing vulkan updates for win 7 either.

vulkan is huge it will replace DX

Vulkan will totally crush DX12. Just like OpenGL crushed Direct3D.

Oh wait...

Well, at least Vulkan tries to be better than the fuckup that OpenGL was. But still people should be warned, though.

openGL was fuckup? that is all consoles are running on including Xbox One in the earlier games

Platform-exclusive stuff like this is dying so this comment is somewhat justified.

yes OpenGl constantly lags in features and performance. They usually eventually catch up but rarely are they leading.

think you might have to provide a citation for that. Xbox doesn't support and has never had an OpenGL framework written for it to my knowledge.

Isn't the Unreal Engine going to support both anyway? I mean it does now with DirectX and OpenGl, so why shouldn't it with the upcoming equivalents? I am not sure about other engines, but that is a big one in the room.

Considering even Win XP isn't dead yet, I'm quite confident that fan favourite Win 7 will remain alive for quite some time. Especially if MS keeps forcing its ridiculous invigilation policies.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

I gather you are talking about the stats etc that flows out of win 10 (i.e. the same stats that they patched win 7 and 8 to provide a few months ago). From a gaming perspective XP is dead. If you are happy to live on old tech and not get any of the newer games then go for it,  but I doubt Vulkan will be your saviour as they are going to struggle to support all the current platforms let alone try and support End of Life products.

Ruler, please. Do you have *any* knowledge sometimes in threads you participate in? I mean, seriously... It's getting annoying.

Tell us which game on Xbone uses OpenGL. Or a game on 360 or PS4...
