Forums - Gaming Discussion - Did sony 'steal' the marketing rights for MGSV:TPP from xbox?

I don't literally mean steal...

Usually games that show at one consoles E3 presentation generally (most of the time) have some sort of marketing deal with that console, be it a major deal (like COD) or a minor slap-a-logo-on-the-end-of-trailers (like witcher 3).

MS had Metal Gear V: TPP opening the show at E3 2013. Now this wasn't a mere trailer like slapping Dark Souls 3 in the middle of your conference, but this was a big presentation with the first gameplay reveal of the game, and even had Hideo Kojima come out and praise the game as being 'amazing on xbox with great visuals and smartglass'. One of the gameplay vids that came shortly after that even used 'xbox buttons' (although that could've been PC)

Opening or closing the show usually means xbox are getting behind that game, so it's weird (isn't it?) that 2 years later (even less than that) metal gear v trailers have the complete sony marketing package (PS Logo, custom consoles, hardware bundles and more)

Obviously, being a japanese company, preference would edge towards Sony if the choice was given, but it looked like it was going to be a xbox-marketed game from the way Don Mattrick bigged it up (and pretended to be friends with Kojima)

Do you think Phil Spencer got rid of the deal, seeing as it would have minor impact? Do you think Sony 'stole' it? Was the Konami/Kojima fued all to do with this perhaps?

I mean, I think that GZ sales really made the idea of partnering with Xbox One the Phantom Pain an irresponsible proposition.

I think they may have just made the deal for that E3 showing, and nothing more. Konami would probably want a lot of money to sign off the full marketing rights to an untested market (Xbox.)

Konami must be the true winners then. Can't have been cheap to have the showing, especially moreso if you consider konami wanted to be the opener, which means MS must have got rid of an 'opener' in favour for konami.

Umm no, I'm pretty sure Microsoft paid a shit ton of money to developers that E3 2013 too NOT show their games on PS4 and I'm sure MGSV was one of those games. Doesn't anyone remember that?

Lol yeah, MS spent so much money on so many things at launch, most of which just went to waste!

Well, considering that Activision couldn't even demo COD on Xbox One should have been a red flag.

Maybe the deal was just timed. Like so many other things.

A correct title for this thread would be "Did Sony snake out the rights for TPP from MS"

And no, whatever the case may be, Sony has more "right" to any marketing edge to this series than MS imo. MS got away with enough popping the rights to Tomb Raider for a full year and Sony are going pretty light on them. I'm all for healthy competition but a one year deal is anti gamer. To me it reads "We took a franchise you like hostage for a year, now buy our big old box if you don't want to wait.

Sony could make a deal like that without having to pay a cent but I don't see them resorting to these horrible tactics.

Those 1 year exclusive content on Destiny are another horrible tactic by MS.

They had one last year and another this year running through 2016.

The question and the answers here make no sense.

You guys live to much into the console warriors territories.

The 2014 world reveal do MGS-V is nothing out of the extraordinary. And was a bold move for Microsoft leaving another COD campain gamplay. And it was a reminder that MGS is not a Sony exclusive.

E3 deals are only E3, the heavy stuff are signed before or after the event.

Let´s also forget about Street Fighter V...

Those deals are not made for free, dosen´t matter how bigger the PS4 user base is.
