Forums - Sales Discussion - if Sony drops the price will Microsoft follow?

Lmao MS would have no choice but to bend over and take it. But why don't you think a $300 entry point wouldn't be worth it for Sony after being on the market for 2&1/2 years? It sets up 2016 perfectly with all the games that can move hardware (UC, SFV, FF, possibly GT7, maybe PSVR).

The thing is, MS is a massive company and Xbox is but a tiny part of it. If Sony goes overboard here, they could strike somwhere else. What if they actually do get AMD? They could pay Sony back for this abuse with different kind of abuse ;)

I think it may not be worth it, cause if you sell millions of consoles for $350, you get millions of $50 on your account and Sony is a company that can use every single $ it can get. The war has already been over a long time ago, so now they have to analyze the market very closely and milk it in the best way possible.

This sais, I'd love a $300 PS4 ;)

Not really, I mean, you have to remember, Sony and AMD have pre-existing contracts for parts.  That's not something they can just void during a merger/buyout, without absurdly costly rammifications.  Plus, iirc, Sony actually was involved in the tweaking of the AMD chips.  Not sure how that complicates issues, but I'd imagine it would add to the legal rammifications if Microsoft bought out AMD and then decided to do something shady.

PS4 is beasting but given the fall lineup I hardly see it ahead of the Xbone in october/november NPD, pricedrop or not.

So MS doesn't need to follow this year IMO.

For the year PS4 has more exclusives.  That means those exclusives will be cheaper and possibly have holiday bundles as well.  Just because something like Bloodborne came out in March doesn't mean someone could have waited till Xmas to get a PS4 and it

Well, of course there are people who wait for christmas to buy a console with a game that was released months before, but we usually consider a game's sales to double from the first week to the first month than from the first month to the first year (1000 fw -> 2000 fm -> 4000 fy) IIRC, so they are not a majority.

Uncharted collection and all the marketing exclusives mentionned earlier will have a bigger impact.

I've read that Sony has profitted from the PS4 since launch, they can easily drop $100 and still make a profit.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.  Not sure they've reached $100 price cut profitability though, haven't seen an isuppli teardown of the PS4 recently, but, it's been a bit since the PS4's launch so the manufacturing/assembling prices have to have come down quite a bit since launch.

Sony said (IIRC) that with the sale of a game with a PS4 (i.e. not bundled) they made a slight profit at the start of the generation. So PS4 by itself sold at a small loss. I think there was also information going around early in the generation that Xb one without Kinect had slightly lower production cost than PS4.

2-years in, and with an internal hardware refresh, it seems highly unlikely that PS4 is only being sold at a small unit profit or break even. But I wonder if that production and distribution cost has dropped below $350 yet. It probably has, but who knows other than Sony?

Why not a $300 PS4? That was the sweet spot for the PS2 & they can always cut to $249 a few years later.

If PS4 goes to $300 permanent this holiday, MS will likely be getting an Xbox Two ready much sooner than we think. I think that's a scenario that Sony is trying to avoid, forcing MS to jump start another gen too early where they can gain ground on them, like last gen. I doubt MS would want to throw in the towel on consoles altogether. I'm sure they still want to associate with gaming to keep the Microsoft brand in the mouths of the younger generation.

Yeah, at launch according to Isuppli, PS4 was $381 to build, so it's had to have come down a good chunk since.

I personally don't think so.

I feel like they'll probably just try to stay ahead with massive bundles and big marketing from games like Halo 5.

Would Microsoft still be making a profit from selling the Xbox One at $300 this early on anyway? If not then they should probably just try to make profit off of first party software like Nintendo is doing with the Wii U.

Well, If Sony does decide to lower the price (and honestly, lets face it, they don't have to) then the timing would have to be perfect. Xbox One isn't assured a victory in October regardless of the hype. But its safe to assume that they will be very competitive. The problem is that the Halo bundle is $500. This means that Sony's offering is already $100 cheaper. If I was Sony I would want to conclude with Microsoft to get as much revenue out of the industry. But that is a whole different topic.

Sony still has the best hand to play with Star Wars. I doubt they will pull that trigger but if they do, and go $299 or even $350 then its over. The ultimate conclusion is that Sony will win. They will decide by how much they want to win and if its worth throwing away revenue. Any price drop will boost sales, so the fact that Xbox One is currently available for $350 and is not winning really means you have to look at whats going on. Sony is up year over year without a drop.

Uncharted Remaster will probably do pretty damn well, as remasters go.

Well I can't see an XBTwo launch until 2018 the earliest. MS can still profit from hardware & software instead of risking to jump the gun. & IIRC the PS2 outsold the 360 in its early years.

MS will pretty much have to. They already can't gain any ground on Sony, as it currently is.

At the end of the day though, it's not about just sales numbers. MS had to regain it's profits on each unit sold, after the last big price drop. I don't think MS is in the mood at this point, after all the money they've already put into the XB1 in just this passed year.
