The blog says "we're dropping the price" which means price drop. So, its a price cut.

The main body of the article says the "PS4 system" implying the stand alone model at $349

then there's the "hardware line up" where all bundled and limited edition bundles get a $50 price drop.

Looks like uncharted is a free game sooo...

but yeah, i get your point. taking out the game sony could also drop the price by another 50 or just claim that it was a promo bundle hence the price remains the same at 349.

my only concern is, maybe we're giving ms and sony too much credit. since, you know... they're a bunch of dumbasses.

Just because we can't always understand why MS or Sony do something, doesn't make them dumbasses. At least you understand what I mean now though ;)

Sony could easily lose that bundled game and release a standalone PS4 for $300 because they wouldn't lose much at all. They could even throw in a game like TLOU or Driveclub because they've made their money on TLOU and have been bundling it for free for a while, and they've already said that Driveclub will be a service so the more people who have the game the more Sony make from future DLC.

This should be pinned.

I'm never going to understand how Phil Spencer being quoted in an interview that 99% of gamers will never read is going to somehow slow down PS4 sales LOL.

It obviously won't and it was also obviously not Spencers plan, he just said what he believed but in console forums it's all about "we have to bash every sentence the boss of the division responsible for a console I don't own says"

I could have worded that better. Sony haven't called it a $50 price drop, they've called it a price reduction which doesn't indicate an actual number. Look up the PS Blog post and read it carefully. Every bundle that's dropped in price has had a game bundled with it. Remove that game and Sony save the cost of the game. I belive Sony are hiding a $100 drop behind these bundles and will use it if necessary, but if it performs well enough they won't need to.

That's fantastic, all of the standard 500gb bundles are 350 but the standalone which price was never announced could definitely be 300-320/330 dollars.

I always think it's gotta sting that when your competitor is the same price as you it's no competition in your home land.

My take on the situation:

Spencer suggests Sony will drop the price of the PS4 at PGW in order to try and slow sales of PS4

It worked to a degree so Sony decided to drop the price early.

This is exactly what Spencer wanted, which is why he was precise with when.

Sony know this is what Spencer wanted and know it gives him the advantage of a later price cut come Halo week.

Spencer leaves the price of the bundles as is because the price cut only gave Sony parity.

Sony play it clever though and don't actually announce a $50 price drop but rather a price reduction, making sure there's a game with every bundle that's reduced.

Spencer looks at the situation and wonders why Sony haven't gone for the usual $100 price cut. He's now uncertain.

Sony now know that all they have to do to match another price drop from MS is to release a standalone PS4 for $300 and perhaps throw in an older game if need be.

It's a game of chess.

no, they're a bunch of dumbasses.

1. MS should have realized that no one wanted kinect, or at least, the majority didn't want kinect by just looking at how the damn thing fizzled with the 360. dumbasses

2. Sony goes...awwww, vita aint selling...why?! dooooods! you dumbasses aint supporting it! dumbasses.

3. MS. why we not sell well? doood! you just repeated Sony's mistake with the ps3 at priced the one stupidly high! dumbasses

4. Sony. damn! ms selling well in us for couple of months...hmmmm... wait till last minute to cut price coz we haz no games for xmas. way to go dumbasses. luck for sony that MS major fail still lingers which masks their own dumbasses fails.

i can go on and on.. they may be multinational billion dollar companies but that doesn't mean that those running it are uber smart or geniuses. they be dumbasses as well.

case in point. Sega was run by a bunch of moronic dumbasses. weeeee sega genesis 2 + 32X + sega cd = WTF?! with zero coordination bam saturn! then boom dreamcast in so short a time! then what? they be dead in da console market.

I can name countles huge ass companies that just rolled up and died coz those running em are dumbasses. again, just coz it seems that they know what their doing coz their multinational corporations doesn't mean that they aren't dumbasses... Sony just lucked out bigtime due to MS and Nintys major uber fail meldown craptastic decisions.

and no, i'm not angry, i just like pointing out dumbasses when i see one.

Regarding the whole 'price cut' vs. 'new SKU' disagreement. On purely technical terms for retailers/manufacturers, sure, you can deny price cuts.

However, from the consumer perspective, the chief overriding factor is 'cost of entry'. The cost of entry for Xbox One has lessened considerably since launch (unless you want Kinect, which was poorly received this gen and virtually irrelevant now).

Now many models/configurations will be available over the lifespan of a given platform in most situations. The differences between them are minor at best in the eyes of consumers unless there is something BIG missing or gained in what you get.

Virtually nobody cared about PS2 backwards compatibility (probably because 800 million PS2s existed, and everyone had one lol). Nor was a bunch of USB ports or memory card slots really interesting to very many people with the early PS3s either. So cutting that stuff to make cheaper SKUs didn't make a significant or even notable difference to the VAST majority of PS3 buyers who just wanted to play the big games. This is very similar to X1 Kinect vs. X1 DisKinect.

If the feature(s) aren't relevant to the consumers at large, but they can now buy it cheaper, then in THEIR EYES : it's a price cut.

On the flip side, releasing a severely crippled variant of a product like the PSP Go (can't play disc games, doh) has to be looked at significantly as a unique product, and not as a 'price cut'. Remember the rumored 'discless' Xbox One? Let's say that they actually released that this holiday season for $199, with a 500GB HDD. That wouldn't count as a 'price cut' in the minds of consumers because most people still prefer to be able to buy games in stores, collect/trade/sell them freely, etc. Whereas Kinect was a niche novelty thing that a fraction of people cared about, being able to go to Gamestop/Best Buy/Wal Mart/Friend's House and get a game disc to bring home to slap in and play is still the defining console experience for the average consumer.

It's all semantics, but in the end the most important thing to consumers is :

Cost of entry for their desired result.
