Forums - Sales Discussion - GameStop Refuses to Sell Console Bundles That Include Digital Copies of Games

Great inictiative from GameStop... I support this view... I expect others retails to follow that after see most gamers bying at GameStop due Physical discs.

"Over the last few years, we've seen the return of the classic "pack-in" console bundle, featuring both a game system and a game to play once you get it home. If you check major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop or Target, not only will you find a wide selection of bundles, you'll actually have a hard time finding a brand new console that doesn't have a game packed in with it. And in almost all of these cases, the game promised on the front of the box is actually a card with a download code printed on it. Almost.

During a recent earnings report conference call, GameStop executives outlined their decision to move away from "digital" bundles and highlighted their recent effort to provide "physical" bundles instead. This new strategy went into effect just last month, with the release of Madden NFL 16. While other stores sold Xbox One and Playstation 4 bundles featuring digital copies of the football game, GameStop "worked with Sony, Microsoft, and EA" to reach an arrangement for the retailer to provide a physical copy with any new console purchased. This isn't just a little experiment either. GameStop COO Tony Bartel explained that if Sony and Microsoft continue to release digital bundles, GameStop will turn to "third party" physical-bundles. This could mean that they'll work out a deal with a major publisher like EA or Ubisoft to include a free physical copy of a recent release."

And the end for Gamestop draws nearer, with them kicking and screaming to the end.

This move will in the worst scenario increase GameStop sales.

It is a great move.

Good move for gamestop who needs physical games go resell at 55 dollars when the game costs 60 new.... But it doesn't matter digital is gradually eating away at physical sales

I saw this yesterday. Still wondering how they are going to work this out. With the exception of TLOUR and Nathan Drake collection bundles all PS4's already come with physical disc, but almost every Xbox One bundle is digital. So are they going to stop selling Xbox One bundles or open and remove every digital voucher and replace them with physical copies?

They will first ask MS/Sony to make a physical bundle only for them (that already happened with others games with GameStop being the only to sell the bundle with Physical game).

If MS/Sony denied then they will do they own bundle (retail do bundles too outside the console manufaturers).

I think it's merely a final futile attempt to keep physical relevant. Which again, is futile. Great for Gamestop, but it's only short term. Anyone who seriously thinks that this will slow digital down from completely taking over is completely out of their minds. Instead of finding a new bread and butter and modernizing, they are trying to preserve their old bread and butter, which is on the way out, and fast.

They're this generation's Blockbuster.

Lol, gotta keep them used game sales. I give them this gen til they'll have to restructure substantially to stay alive.
