Not an amazing week for the 3DS. We're definitely seeing 3DS sales running low on steam both in Japan and in NPD. I am worried about the 3DS because the NX stills seems a long ways off.

SMM had an OK week but I am not at all worried about it. This Minecraft-esque genre seems to have potential for amazing legs, which makes sense since the software-itself isn't that impressive but rather it's people's creations that eventually draw attention.

The last platform to be worried about honestly considering its running low on steam and is still winning.

I get what you're saying but if we count smartphones, the 3DS is actually losing big time.  The New 3DS was only released 6 months ago and we're already back below last year's sales. :(

The New 3DS released last October in Japan, so almost a full year.

And if we count smartphones, then every system is losing big time. It's honestly a pointless comparison.

Wow, that MGS drop. I suppose it's fairly standard in Japan. Evidence suggest MGSV isn't putting PS4 sales at a new higher level. However that price drop announced this week might put PS4 sales at a new baseline.

I expected Wii U sales to be a bit higher, but a 200% approx. increase isn't bad honestly. SMM had a pretty decent opening as well, though I expect it to trail behind Splatoon

200% increase would be 30K. Double = 100% increase on last week's sales / 200% of the previous week's sales. It's why I generally prefer to talk aboiut double/triple etc when you get beyond double digit % increases, too easy for people to mis-read / mis-understand.

What's PS4's baseline been for this year? I certainly think it's been below 18K, so as far as the second week of MGS is concerned it has managed to keep PS4 above baseline. But whether over a longer stretch MGSV would have held the PS4 baseline above what it has been for the first 8 months of 2015 no one will ever know because the price cut should permanently bump up the baseline by a lot more than MGSV could ever have hoped to achieve. But what I wonder is if this modest price cut will have all that big of an effect. If, as I suspect, consoles have permanently dropped in popularity in Japan, the price cut for PS4 should not have as big of an effect as one might think. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Well, I expected that kind of opening from Super Mario Maker.
Honestly, Mario has never been known for lighting up Japan in the way that Monster Hunter, Pokemon, or Dragon Quest can.
Mario games tend to have stronger legs and better longevity.
SMM is going to be just fine.
And that 100% increase for the Wii U is certainly a welcome sight!
And even better, Splatoon is closing in on Mario Kart 8!!

Yikes at that PS4 hardware drop, I would have thought it could maintain ~30k or at the very least been above 20k.

Vita and Minecraft having their lowest week so far for the year. I wonder how much of a boost the new colors will give Vita hardware. I believe the last time Vita got new colos but no price drop was back in 2012 when it went from 4k to 13k. This time it probably won't triple sales hopefully it will be above 15k.

Wii U got a decent boost from SMM. 20k seems to be about Wii U's limit when it comes to none holiday weeks.

3DS keeps chugging along I guess. Monster Hunter did less than  thought it would but that probably due to me not knowing much about the game.

And just for fun I shall boldly proclaim that Vita gets a bigger boost from it's new colors than PS4 with Metal Gear Wii U did with it's SMM bundle.

Maybe gamers are getting saturated of Mario.

Have you seen sales of Mario Games This Generation? o.~

Splatoon doesn't stop to surprise me.

MM will slowly reach that 500k mark that Metal Gear won't, just watch.
