Last week the PlayStation 3 version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain sold around 5,000 units, Chart-Track tells us that sales dropped by 78% (all versions combined), normally last-gen versions tend to have softer drops, at least for these kind of big releases. To be on the safe side let's say its sales dropped by 65-70%, this would mean that this week it sold around 1,500 - 1,800 units, and Tearaway Unfolded is 5 places below so...

I'm genuinely shocked by this. What is there to explain this performance? I can't think of anything.

No hype and many strong releases around it like MGS V, Mad Max and Destiny: The Taken King. Also the platformer audience is small on PS4.

Yeah I imagine that Tearaway only did about 1500 units, maybe a little less. Not a great launch, probably in the low 5-10k worldwide in sales.

Guessing there will be some digital sales, but would be surprised if it got over 20k ww first week, which is sad, but I didnt feel any need to get it - especially at £30. I think a budget price would have helped (and some marketing).

Which is basically the rest of the year, which is why (I think) they wisely decided to move a lot of their games into 2016 (or planned on it in advance).

In regards to the platformer audience, while I do agree that it's relatively small in comparison to previous PlayStation consoles, it was still big enough to allow games like Knack, LBP3 and Rayman Legends to sell (to be fair, 2 of the 3 are established IPs, but still).

I do agree that the release date did not do it any favors either. But even then, why did Until Dawn do so well in comparison when it released only a couple weeks prior? Is it because it's more mature and the UK prefers that?

I think the strongest point is perhaps the lack of hype and marketing. I'm really surprised Sony didn't push this more. Maybe they'll take the LBP3 route and just promote it over time, but even then, LBP3 got at least some marketing before launch.

It's probably a combination of all of these, as you said. It's just weird and it sucks because I think the game deserves more.

Knack was heavily bundled in Japan. LBP3 was heavily bundled in Europe. Both had marketing in the West. Rayman Legends hasn't sold well on PS4.

You answered yourself there. UK prefers mature games, especially on non-Nintendo consoles. Its probably done better in other countries in Europe.

The game is lame. Mystery solved.

Really, the game is like an artsy indie game that gets good review scores, but nobody wants to buy it for its asking price. It's certainly not an exciting title and it's only mildly interesting. Tearaway was Vita's big holiday game in 2013 and back then it also had no noteworthy competition to go up against; it still flopped in all countries it released in. This isn't the kind of title that got lost in the shuffle or suffered from being released to a low installed base, so the fact that it didn't fare better on the PS4 shouldn't be all that surprising.

Pretty much this and I've already accepted it long ago. Tearaway is a great game but destined to fail. You really need to experience it first hand but if you don't, there is nothing selling it. Before playing the game, there is nothing to grasp, nothing that invites the player. Artstyle does not make any sense, there are no likeable characters, basic movement or maneuvers does not look cool, the whole game echoes a pile of weirdo shit......until you play the game. It's sad, it really is because Tearaway has something that is really rare in games, heart. But yeah, position yourself in place of average PS4 owner visiting game store, see some game boxes, pick up one by one Witcher 3, Batman, CoD, Fifa, Project Cars, Until Dawn, Tearaway, Destiny, Battlefield, Trials, PES, Order, Rory, Alien, PayDay, Diablo......yeah, are you really going to risk it going with Tearaway?

It is what it is.

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.

Good debut for Mario Maker. I would have liked a top spot debut

That would be an amazing feat. Second spot is pretty good too if you take in consideration that it was competing with MGSV.

When was the last time a super Mario game didn't debut at #1 on the individual formats? And consideraing a 78% decline for MGS that was not a very big hurdle for SMM. I do wonder if both PS4 and Xb one sku's dropped by about 78% or if one dropped more than the other. 78% is a huge drop. What was the total last week? 169K? So we're looking at 37K this week, I can see it being 26K PS4, 10K Xb one, 1K the rest.

Tearaway Unfolded makes a very underwhelming start. I guess it was always only ever going to be a slow burn, but somewhere close to the top 10 would have been nice. Tearaway demo is available on PSN, which I've downloaded, and if I decide to get it I may well buy it digital. Or, possibly more likely, when it inevitably comes to PSN+ I will get it then. It doesn't feel like a title that will see a lot of retail success and more than likely it will sell much higher in proportion through PSN.

Until Dawn dropping more slowly than Gears Ultimate. Expected I suppose. Gears has its fanbase and relative to 360 it has shrunk at least as far as a remaster is concerned. Until Dawn is developing a fanbase so legs should be relatively stronger.

That's terrible even for a game like Tearaway Unfolded, I wonder why people put it on the "list"?
