Forums - Sales Discussion - Can the WiiU outsell the PS Vita?

People also look to a system's future though. Something which has looked woeful for Vita since 2013, but now also looks equally dire for Wii U for the first time since release. (there was always the big title that was going to spark a sales rally on the horizon for Wii U previously)

That title was Zelda and guess what, is still there but now Pokken makes it company.

To be fair, if Zelda was pushing hardware in the holidays, that effect would have been last year before the delay. I don't doubt if it does still come to Wii U as an exclusive, it will drive hardware sales. But at the moment it's no longer a given that it will remain exclusive to the platform.

Except for Zelda.

And Star Fox.

And Mario Tennis.

And a proper 3D Mario.

And Xenoblade X (outside of japan).

And ....

Pretty much as niche as the Vita offerings then. :p Zelda is the only realistic proposition on there of significant hardware sales. (Any proper 3D mario now will be a launch title for the successor)

If someone is somewhat interested on games like SMM, Splatoon, Smash Bros, XCX etc and they know that at the very least they will have the new Zelda on WiiU next year, chances of him purchasing the console this holidays are higher, because otherwise he would have to wait a full year for a console that we don´t know if is gonna be compatible with those games at all

Also Star Fox is not nearly as niche as some of you says,  Everyone talks about Persona 5 being a big deal (and It is quality-wise) and yet chances are that Star Fox or Pokken are probably gonna sell more than P5 on a console with a 1/3 of the install base, so I wouldn´t call that niche.

I don't see XCX as much of a system seller tbh. However you are right, Splatoon could still drive some decent hardware sales this Christmas as that was a pretty big hitter and with Nintendo's market more being driven by parents buying systems for their kids, if their friends had Splatoon they may well have put the Wii U on their wishlist this year.

The issue I have however with "well past hits will also drive sales" is it makes it sound like the Vita has no software at all that people may want from it's legacy catalogue.

Persona 4: Golden sales could be driven by Dancing All Night hitting, but more so from the big interest in Persona 5 that is starting to pick up.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss could also gain more interest from first the Uncharted Collection hitting, then also Uncharted 4 next year.

There are also a lot of curio titles which could tempt people over once the system has a price cut (Price point isn't only a potential ammunition for Wii U at this point).

People has already forgot about those, while Mk8, Smash, Splatoon or SMM are still on fire though, and if Vita doesnt have anything big that makes people remember about those, then they will remain forgotten, it doesn´t help that 2 of its more iconic games are in Ps4 too. PsVita can outsell WiiU at the end mostly because of Japan, but it doesn´t has a chance on holidays.

I wasn't saying they were evergreen titles. I was saying the new iterations in the franchises could stoke interest in the older titles.

As for games still being on fire, yes, but they are on fire to existing owners. Wii U hardware sales have tumbled right back down since they launched. On the otherhand my example was more geared towards potential new owners.

We all know the holidays is when Nintendo sells most of it's systems. However, you still can't assume it's going to be a huge holiday for them year in year out. I remember people expected Wii sales to continue trucking into the sunset, and they pretty much just fell off a cliff.

Good for you, Zelda will still outsell all those games combined and it fully deserves too.

My post isn't argueing which console will outsell the other because they both sell like trash anyway. I'm saying that just because one console outsells the other it doesn't mean it's better, which is what some people here seem to think (the same people who will argue that the Vita has a better library than the 3DS mind you).

I'm also 100% sure that if some Wii U exclusives were Vita exclusives instead they'd be on your list now. Lol.

Vita... Vita just needs to keep on floating the way it is. It already has two games announced for 2016 that are potential 1+ mil sellers (DQ Builders and Minecraft: Story Mode) and another solid seller in World of FF. It'll be fine in 2016.

So you're saying people buy the Vita despite there not being any reason to? Yeah, some fans by anything made by a company. ;)

As for million sellers, Vita won't get any of them anymore.

Minecraft Stories is 2015.

Vita won't be fine in 2016 (and neither will Wii U).

The Vita has an advantage in the fact that Sony does not seem intent on releasing another handheld. So, they're going to leave the thing on the market for as long as it will sell, without a direct successor to steal its (limited) momentum.

But the Wii U has always outperformed the Vita on holidays by a decent margin of at least a few hundred thousand, and it has a few games left in the tank that will provide a substantial boost (Mario Maker, Zelda).

If the Wii U has two holiday seasons to work with, I think it could be up by about a million by the end of 2017, and I'm not sure the Vita will close the gap. However, I am fairly certain the NX will be here by the end of 2016, so I'll sadly have to say the Vita will probably outsell the Wii U... which is kind of sad, especially since I feel the Wii U had a much better catalog.

1.How do you come to that conclusion?

2. You just have to stop buying everything from your favorite company, there is no reason to buy everything from nintendo.

His post said Vita has no big hitters, but it still outsells Wii U. If Nintendo ever released a console with such a poor/obscure library the console wouldn't sell 500k units. It certainly wouldn't be getting third party support like that (although most of it is niche/obscure).
