Forums - Gaming Discussion - Not really a bold prediction: MGSV is GOTY

GOTY?

MGSV 73 26.26%

Witcher 3 64 23.02%

Halo 5 9 3.24%

Rise of Tomb Raider 2 0.72%

Fallout 4 31 11.15%

Bloodborne 37 13.31%

Xenoblade Chronicles X 20 7.19%

Other 14 5.04%

Splatoon? 28 10.07%

Total:278

Its not really a bold prediction, but I really don't see a situation where MGSV does not win most of the industry publication's GOTY awards.  It currently has a 94 on metacritic, which is the highest of any game this year (I am pretty sure).  There are other great games still coming this year (notably fallout 4, halo 5, tomb raider, etc) and they all might review as well as or even better than MGSV.  But I also know that none of these games had a more storied or infamous development than MGSV.  Between Hideo kojima' last video game with konami, konami's change in direction, the cancellation of Silent Hills, the pulling of P.T., I don't think any journalist can resist giving GOTY to MGSV to both honor Kojima and, (maybe cynical) spite Konami.

There will always  be contrarians who go against the popular choice and that will be fine, but I think the overwhelming majority will go to MGSV.

Summary:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will win the overwhelming amount of Game of the Year awards because even if another game gets as good reviews as MGSV, it will not have the storied developement or the opportunity to honor the swam song of an industry great that MGSV does.

Who cares? My opinion is that Arkham Knight is GOTY.Though the whole GOTY thing is nonsense.

I think MGS5 will win several GOTY awards, but having spent 50 hours in it now myself; I find it to be a very polarizing game. It's an extremely well crafted stealth game, but it's extremely disappointing as a Metal Gear because it misses the mark on aspects that made the series popular in the first place (ex. narrative).

Personally, and sadly I find it to be the weakest MGS main title. The opinions (at least on GAF) are quite split with some loving the gameplay so much they don't care, and others like me who wanted a wacky as hell narrative driven MGS title that we're used to.

GOTY for me will likely be Bloodborne, others Witcher 3, some MGS5, but critically i'm positive Fallout 4 will obtain the most whether it deserves it or not.

Well, there's Fallout 4 coming. I don't think the MGSV hype will survive until the end of the year. Bioshock Infinite got 94 on Metacritic, but in the end of 2013 nobody even remembered about it.

My vote is for Fallout 4.. cause.. reasons.. mostly because its Fallout 4

No.

Like MGS4, its all hype and will be forgotten about when the ''lists'' start dropping.

Just like how MSG4 wasn't in the top 100 games IGN did a while ago, and rightly so.

Not much competition in the sparkly AAA space, easy win.

This what I was afraid of and why I am waiting for a chew used copy to purchase it.Konami obviously forced Kojima to appeal to the COD fanbase, which is why it's multiplat and I did not like most changes from playing GZ.

This is sad for me and from watching the streams I see exactly what you mean about what's missing.

MGS5 lost what made MGS special and reviewers are only hyping it because it's MGS and dumbed down for the mainstream.

Thats a good point.  It did seems quite weird that bioshock infinite seemed to be forgotten so easily.  I think it could  be because it was realised earlier in the year and alll the hype was gone, but I'm not certian about that.  I think MGSV is hitting at the perfect time for award season though IMO.
