Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Kotaku: Creator of SMW hacks gets hit hard by Nintendo's Youtube policies

Earlier this month, speedrunner Alex “PangaeaPanga” tweeted that his YouTube channel had been “wrecked.” Taking a closer look, I noted that even the popular video titled Item Abuse 3—which was billed as the “hardest Super Mario World level ever”—was taken down from the service after accruing over a million views. Alex says there’s a reason for that: Nintendo is becoming more aggressive on YouTube when it comes to tool-assisted speedruns (or, in other words, playthroughs of Mario games that utilize emulators.)

To wit, other Super Mario fans on TAS forums are noting that some of their favorite Super Mario speedrun videos around the web are disappearing, and other tool-assisted content creators say they’re being forced to take down their videos, too:

They are doing this probably due to SMM's release. Still though...  I hope Nintendo will stop with all this crap one day.

It's counterproductive for Nintendo. If they have been spending so much money on adertisement for their new titles, why would you alienate people that can produce quick and efective awareness of your brands and products?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Damn that sucks. There were a lot of good hacks out there.

Needed to be done. Almost all of their speedruns and levels can be remade with SMM. There is no need for illegal means anymore.

On one hand, I don't like Youtubers (generally).

On the other, this results in FREE advertising for Nintendo's older titles, bringing awareness to a generation that couldn't care less about Mario.

If I was in charge of whoever's doing these takedowns, I would've left them up.

Ehh, I dunno.

I know SMM is going to be a thing, but I still don't like Nintendo with their rather strict YouTube policies.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Maybe it's to show them that they can do it using Super Mario Maker?

Its Nintendo so the usual sugarcoating will happen. Now if it was Actvision, Konami, EA or something like that ppl would be outraged and raging all over the internet.

There are some things you can't do with SMM, but they are pretty trivial when it comes to making fun and interesting levels.
