You must have missed the AR part of it. As you traverse the real world, you can 'encounter' pokemon in the game through AR.
As far as smartphone games go, this may be the one that gets kids outside more than any other Android/iOS game.
Ask yourself this: If you ran advertising for Nintendo, and you got a chance to have an ad on the Super Bowl or World Cup final, what could you put your money on? A WiiU/3DS game or this?
Pokemon is globally very popular.
