Forums - Gaming Discussion - Double Standards In The Gaming Industry. Which Ones Do You Hate/Find Suitable?

Any sequel stays roughly the same and the reviewer goes

"it's getting stale and didn't innovate enough"

Then another will come out (mostly the Nintendo games in their big franchises) and they stay pretty much the same and the reviewer goes

"it's more of what we love" or in Nintendo's case "it's the Nintendo magic and reminds me of being a kid!" because they grew up with those franchises which isn't fair in the slightest as they're bringing their own nostalgia into it.

I very much agree with this.  I've seen excellent games get criticized for "not innovating the genre" while "jump when the game tells you to jump" games seem to get a pass.  That makes no sense to me.

On a related note, the way some people act like FPP games are somehow doing it wrong.  I think that's one of the more ignorant sentiments in gaming.

It boggles my mind how WB doesn't get the level of hate that EA, Ubisoft, or Activision gets. They have some of the worst DLC practices in the industries and a track record of releasing broken games for PC. The MKX and Arkham Knight ports being the most recent examples.

The insane hate on Ubisoft and especially the Assassin's Creed franchise while Nintendo is allowed to do anything they want. To be fair, they do receive some minor backlash here and then, but still.

Just people who are so biased against other companies and so devout to another, as if which video game system (which is just a toy) you own determines your social standing. People who hate on Nintendo or Microsoft and always downplay anything they do, or people who will always shoot down pc gaming, or vice versa.

I see it ALL the time on here, and I won't point fingers, but holy jesus is it embarrassing. If I limited myself to just one brand, I would be missing out on so many good games.

That PS4 vs Wii chart article that was recently posted is a good place to look. Why do people take video games so seriously? Why can't people enjoy all systems/game developers? Why do people always have to trash-talk certain companies? I will never understand.

Hi

My biggest issue lately is the almost guaranteed point off I see for most Nintendo releases on account of it being "too familiar". I kept seeing that line with the recent Yoshi game, the Kirby game, Super Mario Maker, DK Tropical Freeze etc.

What bothers me is they'll often spend much of the review praising the game but then complain that it's too familiar to them, as they've played similar games before. This is something I almost never see said or held against games like Call of Duty/Assassin's Creed etc, games that are often almost carbon copies of previous releases and release far more often than most of Nintendo's franchises.

I think it's inadvertent and subconscious on the part of most reviewers as they've been seeing these characters since they were young, but it's also irresponsible.

All of them? No double standard is good

Assassin's Creed games are seldom carbon copies. Each iteration adds something new along with a new world and sometimes try to push boundaries or entirely shake the formula, along with different story everytime. Not a carbon copy, not at all. Oh, I don't see where DKC TF was scored poorly for being similar to previous entries, it scored well on Metacritic. Talking about Nintendo lets not forget about Pokemon though, its the same game every year which scores very well.

Nintendo and their peripherals they get away with the dumbest thing like a plastic wheel or DLC peripherals. IF EA was the one to lock content behind peripherals gamers would be fuming.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

A recent example would be in the recent VGC article where some people seem to think (hope would be more accurate) that Wii tracking ahead of PS4 means PS4 won't outsell it, even though PS4 is tracking ahead of consoles that outsold the Wii, lol.
