Forums - Sports Discussion - Why USA never jumped the soccer bandwagon?

MLS league is growing, Male Soccer team is performing better. In a few year some of the best young athletes will pick soccer instead of basketball or football and the national soccer team will get more attention.

The biggest sports there are basketball, American football and baseball. None of them are exceptionally big anywhere with some few exceptions, like baseball in Japan. Why USA never jumped the soccer bandwagon? They're like and island, I never heard of a worldwide competition of any of those sports.

Late to the show, but Basketball was an olympic sport waaaaaayyy before soccer. And there has been a basketball world cup for a few decades now. So basketball is a global sport.

What I don't understand is why the USA isn't more into Rugby, a superior sport to American Football in all respects. Though I am also glad they're not more into Rugby because they would totally dominate. People should actually be glad the USA isn't as soccer mad as South America and Europe, because the USA would win almost every world cup. Just look at how well they do in the World Cup with its status as a B-list pro-sport there.

LOL

It would take a least a couple decades to USA to be even in the high tear to be even a contestant to a world cup final, and yeah, that can happen, but winning almost every cup? Lol, nope. Football is a really competitive game, there are no clear favorites when high level/important matches happen.

Brazil is the biggest winner and has the most tradition in the sport, even with a weak team it can hold good positions in a world cup, but that doesn't mean it'll win it, I'm sure you remember that 7-1.

One of the things that make football so popular is that's highly competitive and it's pretty hard to tell who will win even when you have a better team, tradition and actually is playing better.

You don't understand my point. My point is, if the USA was as soccer mad as, say, Brazil, it means it would have been the #1 sport in the USA for several decades already. It would have the sort of machinery around it that American Football does and it would be the completely dominant domestic professional competition. The USA is dominant at the Olympics too, so it's not just its big 3 sports in which is leads the world. The only country that out did the USA at the olympics was the USSR, and that doesn't exist any more. When it comes to sport, when the USA and its people get crazy about that sport it has both the population base and the financial base to kick everyone's arse most of the time. All other countries either lack the financial base or the population base to compete. It's just the way it is. If Soccer had developed in the USA along the same path and the same timeline as it developed in South America, the USA would totally dominate global soccer.

Even now, being so late to the soccer party, and still being a minor pro-sport there, they are likely to be almost permanent fixtures in the knockout stages of the FWC  from now on, which makes the in the top 16 countries in the world, and they will get into the quarter finals regularly. That's pretty much top tier already.

Never heard worldwide of basketball competition? Did it get removed from the Olympics?

What do you mean by isn't popular? Cricket is ranked by most as the second most popular sport in the world, only runs second to soccer. It's massive popularity in India and Asia alone make it huge, then most of the western world and many african countries have it as one of their top sports. (also without a doubt my favourite sport to watch).

This. Athletes in USA work hard and try for football, baseball, and basketball. Very few try to be good at soccer because there's no glorymoney to be made there! If the talent went to soccer instead of the big 3 USA would be a juggernaut at the sport. Don't think that USA has no talent they just don't care about soccer to try. Most are good at multiple sports and go to the one that will provide a better career for them, and soccer in USA is a bad career choice!

Soccer is a national sport with no personal attachment like MLB,NFL and NBA.By that I mean most cities or states have their own team, which makes it a more intimate connection. As a Raven's fan I feel closer to the team since they represent my city.I feel a since of pride when I drive near Camden yards and M&T bank stadium, plus being black I grew up playing basket ball and football or owning one of those balls like most blacks. Then you have high school and college baeball, basket ball and football.Small towns and states have their own teams with huge rivalrys.

>Using FIFA rankings as a basis of fact.

Mexico are also the current CONCACAF Gold Cup holders.

So by every official metric, yes Mexico are a better team. Sorry but your 'US are better cuz I said so' doesn't really hold any water.

And US won the last Gold Cup. In fact, there's a playoff next month for the spot in the Confederations Cup. The USA has performed much better than Mexico in the past several years. The USA are better because they've consistently been a better team and have a better head to head record. You have to go back to June 2011 since Mexico beat the US.

And this doesn't really have anything to do with how terrible FIFA rankings are. Look at where they have England!

Yeah, but only because 60% of your national team consists of descendants of immigrants from Mexico.

Missed opportunity to go after the US's Germericans.
