So, yeah, you just read that, a game that looked completely irrelevant just a couple of months ago will be Wii U's king of this year. I'm making a huge bold prediction here since Runbow's score is highly volatile, due to the low quantity of reviews. 

Super Mario Maker is still in the battlefield, but I think it will stick with that score, since it has a good bunch of 80-85 ratings. The only potential candidate left is Xenoblade Chronicles X, but I think it's going to get a lot of criticism due to its gameplay. Star Fox and Fatal Frame are other alternatives, but Fox McCloud's new adventure has horrible visuals and Maiden of Black Water uses a lot the Gamepad, and many critics hate it when it is heavily implemented. 

Either way, if Runbow falls, Super Mario Maker will hold the title, surprisingly.

Journey, a 2-hour long indie game from last-gen, is the second highest rated PS4 game of the year. Big whoop.

The Swapper is the second highest rated game ever on the xbox one.

kirby is the true GOTY for the wii u this year. really the best title across all three platforms so far if you ask me.. i dont know how people dont see it.

Everybody else has better tastes.

I think Xenoblade could beat it.

maybe its worse taste? at least with rainbow curse, it actually feels like youre playing a video game and not some over the top action movie. rainbow curse is not your run of the mill video game, to play the game well takes incredible skill. and the music from beginning to end is phenomenal. i can see how people who dont give the game an honest chance with an open mind could overlook it, but it really is a breath of fresh air if you're into the old school stuff. 

by the way, XCX will score the highest. 

To be fair, 7 critics have reviewed Runbow so far, and I highly doubt too many more will. That's one of the major issues for using metacritic as a metric for... well anything involving indie games. It's far more likely for 7 people to have similar opinions than several dozen.

As for my response to OP, Mario Maker wins. Star Fox 64 is the only Star Fox to exceed 85, and I doubt Zero will, especially with a supposed runtime equal to that of a movie. The original Chronicles just barely topped 90, and some previews for X haven't been super favorable. Fatal Frame, A) exceedingly niche horror franchise and B) no game in the series has topped 84. As for Runbow, one review below 80 will knock it below Mario Maker. Is it possible for Zero, Chronicles X, Fatal Frame, or Runbow to win? Sure, strange things happen, but I doubt it. I think Chronicles has the greatest chance.

WHy is it rated so high. 2 hours is really bad.

The score, that's only what matters here. I don't care if Runbow is good or bad, but apparently the seven critics that have played loved it... and that was enough for it to get an 89 Metascore. 

It may abandon the year with that score, or maybe bot. Maybe Xenobalde will get a 95. Who knows.
