Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could Stores Sell Digital Codes For The NX?

So i heard about Amazon sellling digital nintendo codes. This kinda reminded me about a patent Nintendo filed for a console without a disk drive. So i was thinking that could Nintendo make codes to download games and retailer's would sell them? I thought about this because it would make sense that Nintendo would want stores to continue to sell their products, so by making codes they can have a good relationship with stores like best buy and gamestop.

When 75% of core gamers prefer physical, I don't think so. You don't launch a product that only appeals to 25% of the consumer base.

Look at Japan. They have cards with game codes that they sell in shops. I remember Animal Crossing: New Leaf selling a decent amount of those. I suppose it is for people who don't have credit or debit cards.

Pretty sure your number is high. Its probably 50-60... PC gamers are a prime example of people that have moved on.

Stores already sell digital 3DS and Wii U games. -_- This isn't anything new. GameStop has done it for years. Almost got Luigi's Mansion 2 through a download code there.

And even if it was that high, none of it matters when 99% of that "75%" would jump on digital if they had no other choice. Like I said, no Pokemon/Zelda/Mario/Metroid/etc mega-fan is just going to skip the next game in their favorite franchise because they can't buy a disk. Not only will they buy the NX and the game, the the experience will be so good, they'll be revisionist about ever being against digital only.

Wii U have digital codes so NX will probably have them too.

Of course stores could sell digital codes for the NX, but that's not the problem. The problem is convincing everyone that still prefers physical releases (basically the majority of people) into buying a system that's digital only. Either you manage to get Steam-like prices or you risk yourself to abysmal failure. The market is nor ready for a digital-only console yet, and Nintendo is the one company that shouldn't be risking with that.

I still think Nintendo won't do that, though. Cartdridge-based console, yes. Digital only, no.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Yes, because stores already do sell digital codes for games
