Why watch other people play sports?

/thread

I'll agree when it's something like golf, but even then it's about cheering on the player as opposed to the team. That's generally what watching sports is about. Living vicariously through someone or many others. Often the reasonings for this is because it's where they grew up, or they have a tie to it in one way or another. With gaming, it's not. For the most part the ability to play the game is a real thing, they are quite accessable and generally cost the same as the cost for the internet that it is being watched with.

Very few have the ability to be a professional athlete, however the vast majority have the ability to play a game.

I do understand the idea of watching a video to find out a part you are having trouble with, but I find that walkthroughs generally work better and are easier to find those specific sections.

Your analogy is not correct.

The analogy would be more akin to watching people play backyard sports.

Who doesn't enjoy watching a game of horseshoes or beirut between a bunch of people having fun? Maybe not on tv, but the sentiment is the same. It's enoying a game through other people who are having fun with the game.

I thought the original sketch was mildly funny, but just fine. No reason for "gamers" to get all upset and send stupid, disgusting, borderline threatening messages. Though I found his response to them however, very funny. Those douchebags with no sense of humor are part of the reason people look at gamers as immature and antisocial. This is good for Kimmel, bad for gamers.

Eh, it's just the obvious joke. Anyone who gets upset over it deserves to be an upset person.

He's obviously showing a great amount of ignorance but the responses are [expectedly] exaggerated. Expectedly because this is Youtube after all.

youtube comments = hell

I watched some youtubers play video games, like game grumps, but they are mostly comedians so they are just fun to listen to. But i actually agree with jimmy kimmel xD watching pewdiepie is probably the worst thing you could do

I mean, this is a sketch meant to appeal to an audience that doesn't understand the point to where gaming has gotten to. Some people like jokes, some people like watching someone really good at a game be really good at a game. Aside from the odd battlefield rocket launcher kill compilations (which are awesome) and when I need help in some area, I don't really watch other people gaming. That said though, gaming is to the point, where it's seen as a sport in many ways. And people that find this funny don't understand that. The target audience think of video games like a movie, except they really aren't like that at all. So, I think the responses were VERY extreme, I also though this was a pretty damn stupid skit.

man are gamers pathatic. did you see the tweets he got? i gotta say his video where he made fun of the tweets was hilarious. im gonna watch the other one, Jimmy Kimmel might have lost some angry gaming fans, but he gained a new fan with me :D

Lmfao!!! That was awesome, I agree 100 percent. The people comparing it to sports have no clue what they are talking about. We watch let's say baseball because these the best of the best playing for a team, which is why we watch to root for your favorite team. Watching some else play video games ha no value what's so ever.

Everything is a waste of time depending of the observer. For me Twitch is a waste of time. Watching TV shows like Jimmy Kimmel's is also a waste of time.

Sure, modern games have tended towards story, so watching Twitch/Let's plays is understandable for people who can't or don't want to spend money on them but have plenty of time to burn (I guess mostly kids/teens). Others just want to see some gameplay before deciding to spend their money. And there are some that like the commentary/reactions of the uploader. Even in Korea apparently watching streams of people eating is popular xD

Watching baseball has no value what so ever either as you're just watching a bunch of guys on steroids.
