Forums - Microsoft Discussion - FTC Slams YouTube Group For 'Deceptive' Xbox Marketing Campaign

Tagged games:

if only feminist handnt high jacked gamergate. This is what it was all about, corruption in the games media. Now all you hear with GG is anita sarkisian bitching. And ovbiously this wont come to light or make any noise outside some forums. So this shit is just going to keep on happening.

Really sucks that MS are not being punished here at all. We known they done this before, now they have proof and are still able to keep doing so. Just makes me sad.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

buying off reviewers meh, not that big a deal.

Just goes to show you shouldnt put much stock in gameing reviewers, better to use your own judgement after watching some gameplay videos.

This is hilarious! Deceptive marketing? Microsoft? Noooo!

I remember Pewdiepie doing a review of Sunset Overdrive and watching it and saying this is the biggest load of crap I've ever seen. It makes you wonder?

MS again with their dirty tactics and people said it didnt exist. They probably still doing stuff like this

Perhaps as punishment all Xbox One games need 5 points knocked their metacritic score

Wow Microsft shame on you for advertising your product.

There's a fine difference between advertising/advertisement and paying YouTubers money to deliver a message which seems to be the YouTuber's own independent opinion while it isn't.

Shit likes this makes it harder and harder to take a reviewer's/YouTuber's opinion seriously since the reviewer/YouTuber might as well have been paid by someone to deliver a positive review, as in this case. I'm totally fine if a publisher and/or platform holder pays someone to give attention to their product with something like a Let's Play and the people watching know about the deal, but this is just "here is some cash, please tell the hundred of thousands/millions of people who watch you that our product is awesome according to you even if that's not your opinion, deal?"

This is why i stopped trusting reviewers.

Does Machinma review Xbox One games? I'm 100% sure Microsoft or Sony pays websites or gives gifts. What would happen if Microsoft or Sony was caught paying money to let's say, IGN?

Lets say someone did a data dump at Microsoft. Microsoft was found to have paid IGN $50.000 during the release of each Halo title for positive reviews 1-3?

And why does Microsoft get off scott free here.

This is why I don't trust the media's constant barrage of pro Xbox content.  I really have a hard time beliveing that Machina is the only one doing these deals.

Its so hard to trust anything I hear from gaming sites anymore.

All three companies do things like this behind the scenes. Don't get tricked into the whole "good vs. evil" nonsense.

Honestly, I dont feel MS did anything wrong. This is advertising. Just because FTC feels its wrong doesent make it wrong, they are just people with an opinion.

People that actually enjoy MS products can meet those requests without selling their soul. If people arent saying what they actually feel to get money from MS, well thats another story and not MS's fault.

For example, a positive review for money is very wrong. But getting paid to talk about X1 in a positive light doesent hurt anyone.

See... I don't have a problem in the slightest with a company giving an incentive for well put together videos showcasing their good work and what gamers will enjoy about those games, my issue is the fact that they're not allowed to disclose that they are being paid for their work from the company they have an opinion about.

As for the talent themselves... well if I was offered 30k to say my favourite gaming device was the Sega Saturn I'd happily pop a few vids on youtube of me hugging the thing lol, that's a lot of money for a bit of bad press from your fans on the internet.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

I see a lot of misguided comments blaming Microsoft for this when it was actually one of the advertising agencies they contracted with, Starcom, that created the problem. Companies use influential You Tubers all the time to promote products. If they are compensated to promote a certain message that is being presented as opinion they must disclose it to viewers. If you don't and get caught, this is what happens.
