Forums - Politics Discussion - Gun control in light of 3D printers

When 3D printing becomes mainstream how will they do it? I can see 15 years from now some teenager shooting up his school with a gun and matching bullets he printed at home in his 3D printer.

P.S. I'm not advocating gun control. I was just thinking about this randomly.

Well that's scary.

More like a "3D Printing" control thread.

True, but it's a likely scenerio. Another scenerio is that we live in a police state and the 3d printer is always online and has some recognition software to show police that a gun is being produced. Although I'm sure hackers would find a way to disable that or cloud the system. 3d printing could certainly kill gun control efforts.

Personally I am more unconfortable with drones in the public, but that's already starting to happen. I think a lot of people will want 3D printers as the technology continues to evolve. I know I want one.

Wow, I never actually thought of that...

How about a drone with mounted 3D printed guns? Whole 'nother level of fucked up.

What next? People going on a killing spree with their cars and driving people over.

Therefore I think it would be sensible to make people have to acquire some sort of license to drive a car.

Also the car should be registered to their name and have some kind of license number so it is possible to track it back to the owner.

Also people should have to renew their license from time to time to determine that they are still mentally and physically capable to drive their car.

i know it sounds ridiculous, but cars are dangerous in the wrong hands.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Fair enough, but cars are mainstream and drunk driving is a huge cause of deaths in the US so it's not as if after people get their liscence they always drive saftley. Some people just rush to where they have to go be that work or a meeting. Also, if a 3D printing liscence is as easy as car liscense it only proves my point more.

As I stated above you would really need a lot of police technology on the thing like passkeys, always online, and gun recongition software. Of course the shooter will probably look up a youtube video of how to hack his 3D printer and bypass the security system. This is assuming that this issue is even adressed when they go into production for commercial use because the average person isn't going to make guns with the intent of killing people.
