Forums - Gaming Discussion - I'm On Chapter 11 Of MGS5 ... When Does It Start Being Fun?

Do you remember what the previous Metal Gear Solid games were like? A lot of your complaints were present in previous games. The rest feels like you're just ranting against modern day open world games.

I've only started playing but I'm enjoying what I've played so far. Stealth is well done, the Mother Base upgrading sub plot is interesting, and I'm quite liking the concept of building up the Diamond Dogs. It's pretty much a follow up from Peace Walker and rounding the story to the previous MGS games.

Snake was always just a a guy with a gun

I guess maybe your issue is with the open world nature of the game.

Nope. I still love stealth and I've still got the patience to play it well. This game is just bloated and overly complicated. Everything just seems to be designed to annoy. Even Motherbase is a chore to navigate. Why on earth did they make the distancies so long that you had to use a jeep to get to other areas? Even when you call for a helicopter, the time it takes curls my toes. And where is Snake? He's just a guy with a gun.

That Mother Base complain makes me think that maybe you're not the kind of gamer that enjoys slow-paced games, which this game sure looks like one.

Well every MGS is slow-paced game...

I know... which is why I don't get GribbleGrunger's dislikeness for the game, unless he was expecting something completely different to what he's playing.

I think it goes without saying that any game that has you alternating between literally crawling across a level or map and staying motionless requires a slower pace for vast segments of the game.

I don't take vgc seriously anymore.
Since I've been here, I've read this exact thread a million times about games like demon's/dark souls, journey, la noire, tactics, valkyria chronicles, monster hunter, catherine, persona, dota etc etc etc

EDIT: I haven't played it yet, but when I hear vgc complain about how a game shouldn't deserve sales/hype/laud because it isn't actually a game, or even moreso because it's boring, I've learned to ignore it.

It's the contrarian opinion the internet has made a thing of. Or rather the posting of contrarian opinions to a public forum.

Generally it's used more often for reviews written by reviewers who want their fairly irrelevant review to stand out from the general consensus, but in forums it's typically used to stir up arguments with the intent of creating a unnecessarily long thread.

Of course nobody is obligated to agree with general consensus praise.

My favourite games are stealth because I can take my time.I like slow paced games. I like open worlds games. I like stealth games. There is no other reason other than I find it dull and uninteresting.

The PS5 Exists.

Are you seriously serious? Because your description makes it sound like the typical MGS game.

Let's put it this way: I can't stand playing it any longer than an hour before I hit PS4 'Shut Down'.

Motherbase: Overcomplicated and uninteresting. A necessity rather than a side option.
Stealth: Clumsy, awkward, uninteresting to the point of redundant for me. I just kill everyone now because I can't stand another moment of it.
Side Ops: Pathetic and repetative. (get this guy. Get this thing. Blow this up)
Ops: pathetic and repetative. (Get this guy. Get this thing. Blow this up)
Main missions: Pathetic and repetative (Get this Guy. Get this thing. Maybe they'll add variety and let me blow stuff up.)
Gathering resources: Soon becomes a chore you have to do to upgrade your Motherbase
Snake: Just a guy with a gun.
Locations for missions: They're more or less the same. I sometimes think I'm playing the same mission again.
Buildings: Same shape, same layout, even the placement of collectables are in the same places.
Traversal: Slow, frustrating and downright annoying. Who doesn't want to spend ten minutes getting from one side of a mountain to the other?
Cardboard box: The layout of the levels makes it pointless
Tranquilizers: You'd better hurry up or they'll wake up and allert everyone. Ah, just kill them instead.
Alert Mode: Just start again, they're now running around like maniacs even though the alert status has gone.
Climbing: Hit triangle. That curb is more than 4 inches high.
Enemies: Wait a minute, I just removed eight enemies and now there's eight again.
Dust storms: Just make a cup of tea, you can't see a damn thing.
S Rank: Yeah, I'd love to go back and do that mission I found boring again.
Crawling under stuff: Why hell hell am I suddently moving so slow?
Calling for the helicopter: Come on, come on, I haven't got all day!
traveling in the helicopter: Now you've sat there for a while, why don't you sit for a while in the doorway too.
Menus: Jesus H Christ!
Controls: More is less.

It has lots of guns though.

Soooo, you also hate the rest of  the franchise? Because a lot these same things could easily be said about other MGS games.

Have you played the other games in the series? Most of those things exist only in one or two other games, and that's the two most recent games before this.
