Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do you / others get hyped for game sequels in a game series you've never played before?

Personally, I like to see people getting games they want and have craved for year(s). Was actually thinking about it earlier today, I'm rather psyched that Halo 5 is coming out and seeing so many people anxiously awaiting it. Shenmue 3 would be an extreme example of this. I never played the originals, but it's quite obvious there is a rabid and passionate following for the series. I'm psyched they're getting closure as well.

Because the game looks good, this is like asking why one would be excited for a new IP/

Been exicited for a new IP is a completely different thing.

Jumping in on a 2nd or 3rd installment when the story is unfolded in the previous games and is more about tieing up and finshing the story is completely different that been hyped to see the start or a new universe and characters and how it will unfold in a new IP.

Not every game has a story or the story is not important... most racing or fighting  or sport games for example, you can also play Super Mario Galaxy 2 without knowig the story of SMG1.

Or each game of a series has its own story (Final Fantasy, The Elder Scrolls...) and references to previous storys are minimal.

Or each new game of a series rewinds to the beginning of the story and tells a similar plot different (Zelda-games, Civilization...)

Hmm, I see your point, well I'll explain my thinking when this happens:

'Hmm wow this game looks really good, I didn't like the look of the others so I didn't play them but this shit looks sick as fuck'
Usually in the new gen knowing the story isn't vital to enjoying the game, you can hop in on Uncharted and enjoy it at any game.

You can also read up the story online quickly on Youtube, like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22qpIrBJJRY

Yea I saw some amazing MGS V youtube story timelines for poeple new to the series.

Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned and since I read alot of books I'm always wanting to know the entire plot. I do understand the hype on games just looking amazing graphically and gameplay wise can atract poeple to buy without even considering the story which is fine with some games/genre's.

If it looks interesting enough and sounds like a good jumping on point, then sure. As someone else mentioned, I barely got more than 5 minutes into Metal Gear on NES, but was all over Metal Gear Solid two generations later.

It depends on the trailer and the gameplay shown. Like I've never played any Uncharted game before but Uncharted 4 is one of my most anticipated games.

Grand Theft Auto III had a lot of people excited for it who didn't play the earlier ones because of its 3D open-world.
