Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo Foolish for Focusing on Innovation?

You heard me.

Nintendo keeps trying so hard to innovate each generation. That's why they won the 7th gen. That's why they lost the 8th gen.

Say what you want, but the Wii U is a commercial and financial failure. Nintendo gambled and lost. And it's unfortunate really. We often praise innovation. But in my opinion too much of it is a bad thing. I see innovation as change. Change before the others change. You are the first to do something different. However too much of it can be negative. With innovation after success, you alienate those who supported your prior success. Why change so much of a good thing?

I could go on and on. But basically I will say this. Nintendo could easily compete and win any gaming generation. All they need is a less innovative console. Take the Wii u for example. Take the gamepad but offer a normal controller as well. The majority of gamers don't care about the gamepad. Defend it all you want but that's a fact. We want normal controllers. The ps4 and xbone controllers feel and play great for example.

Next, make an online system that actually works. Again, the Wii U online functionality is terrible. Call it what you want. It's bad. No cross game chat, and other features that most core gamers don't really want or care about. If Nintendo got these things right they would easily garner third party support. As of now, hey have none. Recent and upcoming games that aren't coming to Wii u: MGS5, Mad Max, The Witcher 3, Star Wars, Fallout 4, I could go on and on. Core third party popular games don't come to Wii U. Nintendo are being very ignorant by not creating a system structure that is friendly to these games and gamers that play them. With all that, plus Nintendo first party support they'd sweep away competition.

I do understand Nintendo prefers creating an inferior console power in order to support its low price. Nintendo consoles have always been the least powerful to the competition since the n64 days. But honestly they'd sell more if they gave up the price advantage in order to have a more powerful console to run these third party games.

IN CONCLUSION. Nintendo are their own worst enemy. By trying so hard to innovate all the time they lose any advantage they held prior. They could EASILY win. I love my Playstation exclusives, and I also love some of the Xbone exclusives like Halo; but nothing, I repeat NOTHING is as popular as a Mario, Zelda, Smash bros ect. They practically sit on gold and do nothing to capitalize. Games like splatoon. Yeah it's fun. Cool stuff.

I'd rather have a Nintendo console that runs Fallout. And so would many more people. If fallout 4 released next year on the Xbox 360 Or ps3 (last gen consoles) it would STILL each sell more than Splatoon lifetime. And thats just a small example. I don't get it Nintendo. You have the power. You just need to use it correctly.

I have the same worry for the NX. That they try to innovate too much and lose all 3rd party support and the core gamer because of a weak online system. I'm not saying just copy Microsoft and Sony, but for some things you should play up to competition. Unless you want to lose.

Note: this is not a thread to blindly hate Nintendo. This is my unbiased opinion and should hopefully be used for an intelligent discussion. If you are a true Nintendo fan you should want your company to be as successful as possible.

Title has been updated and the thread has been formatted a bit. Removed the weird shot at the mod team.

You mean like the GC?

over 300 million hardware devices sold over the last couple of gens says you are wrong. Out of four gaming devices focused on innovation they have only had one dud, and that dud is making them money.

I think it's funny when one person tries to speak for everybody else.

I do see your point though, and I like that Nintendo tries to innovate but I do see them holding themselves back to push that innovation.

But this also goes both ways bruh.

If I were to ask you were Nintendo dumb for innovating with two screens on the DS, would you say yes? Probably not considering how much it sold. Same thing with the original Wii.

Just because Nintendo's innovations don't always work out for them doesn't mean they should just stop altogether because if you look at their past it has also worked out extremely well for them.

Most 3rd party games don't come to the WiiU because they don't sell, it doesn't have anything to do with power. That's why games like MGSV and Far Cry 4 keep getting released for the PS3 and 360 despite  being 7th gen systems.

I don't want a Nintendo console that's exactly like other consoles. I'm not saying Nintendo hasn't done a lot of dumb things over the past 20 years that it would love to take back, and I'm not saying I like all of Nintendo's "innovative" ideas. But I can appreciate a company for at least trying to give me some variety in my options.

Also, innovation is not necessarily a barrier to some of the things you mentioned. The GamePad has nothing to do why we don't yet have a proper cross-buy or cross-save system, achievements or cross-game chat, for example. It still would only have a maximum of 32GB of internal storage (even though I'm personally fine with the idea of a cheaper console with your choice to buy more memory, this turns a lot of folks off). I highly doubt the Wii U would have faired much better without the GamePad, because what's the selling point then? It would still be based on a different architecture than the PS4 and X1, it would still be lacking those aforementioned online features that modern gamers demand, and Nintendo still would not be moneyhatting third parties for exclusive games nearly as much as it could or should.

It would pretty much be another GameCube, just like it is now.

Here comes the Nintendo knights.

When Nintendo decides to be less innovative, thats the time when i give up on gaming, because innovation is the only thing that will bring something to the next level, Good innovations dont always sell that well, because of confusion and marketing, doesnt mean its bad. You people are too caught up with it supposedly being to sell good you didnt realize what the Wii U means, for the gaming industry. and nintendo as a whole. People love to just randomly hate on things. Im not attacking you, but this thread is at the bottom of worthless threads. Sorry, but seriously, BEING DUMB FOR TRYING TO INNOVATE?? WOW

Ive stated this in the past a couple of times.

Nintendo consoles have been selling less than the previous iteration since the NES (except the Wii).

NES: 61.91 > SNES: 49.10 > N64: 32.93 > GC: 21.74 < Wii: 101.17 > Wii U: 10.14

The Wii was beast, but also a fad.

There are 3 scenarios possible with the NX imo:

1) The Almost Impossible scenario: The NX becomes a Wii 2 and captivates the harcores and the casuals.

2) The Least Probable Scenario: The NX sell less than the Wii U. I mean, history wise it would happen this, but the Wii U is just too much of a fail to be topped. It had to be a Virtual Boy like flop.

3) The Most Probable Scenario: The NX sells something between the Wii U and Gamecube.

Why do you think they don't sell then?

It's because the online structure isn't up to standards with competition and the controller isn't suited for those type of games. Also the ps360 have an insane user base so most companies are trying to take advantage of that.

Also to the other comments on the gamepad; I'm not saying don't include the gamepad. You can still innovate and include a packaged in "normal" controller.

The majority of core gamers don't like the gamepad. Those millions of gta5 or call of duty players want to use a normal looking controller as a standard to their console. Thats kind of a fact.
