Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Wii U the Dreamcast of the 2010's?

Is it similar? If so I'm glad I didnt buy a Dreamcast.

You should ashamed of it. You missed on alot of good gaming and didnt support good games. There should be nothing but shame in your mind. Today we got a worse games market because of it (not because of you alone ofc, but all those that ignored the DC went it was braving new territory in gaming).

I don't think so, mainly because the Wii U will have a successor whereas DC did not. Sure, people might remember Splatoon or MarioKart 8 on Wii U in 5 years time, but by then we'll be eagerly awaiting the release of Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 9/10 for NX. Whereas DC games are far more memorable because they were the last across many different IP's, they were the swansong of Sega before the fall.

DC also had a feeling of untapped potential, it wasn't pulled from the market because it wasn't successful, but because Sega had run out of resources to support it. If Sega hadn't been hurting so badly as a company they could have ridden the PS2 onslaught out and got the DC to a sustainable position. Given the close relationship at the time between Sega and MS, it may well have been that MS wouldn't have released the XB if the DC had remained in the game, and instead thrown their support behind the DC, it certainly would have been cheaper for MS. The Wii U though doesn't have that, it'll have a normal console lifespan, supported by Nintendo in the usual way. Therefore its success or lack of doesn't feel as tragic, and therefore it'll be remembered less nostalgically than the DC in my opinion.

The Wii U wont be remembered 5 years from now, let alone the 16 years that the Dreamcast has since it launched.

I LOVED the Dreamcast, one of the best catalogs of games ever.

Unlike the Dreamcast, the WiiU has games that have sold really, extremely well. 5 years from now MK8, SSBU, Splatoon, Mario Maker may very well keep humming along with online communities.

It's going to be a system many gamers regret not getting when they could.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Not really, I think it's going to be quite the opposite, at this point in time we still have people severely overselling the Wii U (for instance by comparing it to the Dreamcast), while in a couple years I think even those will acknowledge what a shitshow Nintendo has pulled with this system.

Well, you are thinking wrong then. Company decisions and marketing blunders will be widely forgotten and what remains is the system itself and its library of games.

When was the last time you saw someone pointing out that Sega blew hundreds of millions of dollars on a marketing campaign that had TV commercials without gameplay footage and a deal as jersey sponsor for Arsenal London? Nevermind that the Sega logo was absent, so the average person had no clue that the Dreamcast was a video game console.

Or take the GameCube. A system that is heavily romanticized for its software library despite many questionable decisions by Nintendo regarding the design of first party games.

If anything, opinions will be more positive about the Wii U in the future. Partly because the games will do most of the talking in hindsight, partly because the current detractors will be more focused on putting down newer Nintendo systems.

Being reduced to the games is not going to help the Wii U.

Also the DC isn't only remembered for its games either a large part of the nostalgia stems from it being the last Sega console.

I dont understand how someone will regret about not buying the Wii U in time when everybody knows what the console offers (games and features) and is capable of.

Also, its not like the console costs 600$ like the Ps3 when launched, the Wii U is cheap.

The Wii U has a very good catalog of games, the "problem" is that they are too Nintendo hardcore fan oriented.

The Dreamcast had everything, from the best sports games to the best JRPGs of its time to the best fighting games of the generation. It covered all bases.

I still think that the Dreamcast had a better catalog than the Wii U has *right now*.

I own a Dreamcast (have since launch) and can say people here are overselling it, DC was ahead of its time yes but blow for blow the other consoles were better overall as is the Wii U, a lot of the DC's charm is that it was Sega's swan song. I'll say this straight the Wii U library is far better then the DC library, DC had some nice gems but few great titles even when you compare the so called variety in DC it gets beaten down.

Funny..because to me I think Nintendo have been showing decent support for the Wii U despite its failings on the commercial side.

Since when has Wii U a strong cult status? Maybe with Nintendo gamers but nowhere else.

What choice do they have? Also you said it yourself, the support is "decent", not amazing or anything.
