Forums - Sony Discussion - Why you shouldn't purchase a 1TB PlayStation 4

It's a silly thing to emphasise, but basically the reason not to buy the 1TB is because you are getting improved hardware by going with the 1200 model with the smaller HDD.

I'm unsure if I should get one for a different reason altogether. I think we will be seeing a proper hardware revision at the next E3.

Well I was kind of hoping the 1TB release would also be the newest model. Makes sense they need to sell off the old model first, but still a little disappointing. Ah well.

The power consumption is not significant compared to other appliances.

I'm buying 500GB and swapping it out for a 2 TB. Somebody had a good idea for something I could do with the 500GB, because I don't want to waste it, but I forget where that thread went.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure which thread it might have been, but the best use I can think of for a spare 500GB drive is buying an enclosure for it and using it for media in conjunction with something like a Raspberry Pi 2.

I bought a 2TB portable drive and then put the the 500 gb in that case when I was done.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

yeah, I didn't go for the 1TB. As an existing owner of PS4, I've just upgraded the HD to 2GB.

for gamers who are interested in owning a PS4, wait for a better deal, limited editions or slim version (maybe a year or two though).

I never understood that obsession with electricity consumption.
If my "old" PS4 were to be turned on 24/7 (which it certainly is not) it would consume about 50 cents of electricity daily.
So a 25% saving is about 12 cents per day, or about €40 per year (if it ran all day and night). But since it's turned on about 2-3 hours daily at most, the new model would have saved me a shocking €4 every year.

Wow....

I bet the people that wrote the article unplug their refridgerator at night.

See the problem isn't a single device, but all devices in combination.

In addition to the ps4, you have the TV, router and constant ds4 charges. Then you have appliances, light bulbs, laptops, tablets, curling irons/ straighteners (my wife), garage door opener, toaster, etc.

It used to be common to see my electric bill hit $110. I've since dropped it to or below $80 via being observent of usage like led bulbs, using the fire tv for streaming instead of the ps4,  and using our led tv instead of plasma.

That reminds me of last generation when one article said not to buy a PS3 because the contollers came with buildt in batteries that could not be replaced when they broke.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Cool for you, I guess. But a few dollars a month is not worth the constant worrying about light bulbs and whether I should wash my dishes after 10pm to take advantage of cheaper electricity rates. I rather spend a dollar more for a regular lightbulb than go blind under those crappy dim LED bulbs.

What I would save on electricity I'd probably spend on medication and prescription glasses.

I mean "constant DS4 charges"... What does it take to charge it, two cents? I'll be damned if $5 per year will make my quality of life deteriorate to such levels.
