Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo: Not a lot of exclusive indie games on Wii U because “we don’t throw around cash”

Is paying for indie games a waster of money?

Yes 90 27.11%

No 74 22.29%

Only for lame indie games... 134 40.36%

What good indie games? 16 4.82%

Minecraft was an indie game so... 18 5.42%

Total:332

Interesting poll by the way. The guy talks about moneyhatting exclusives and the poll asks about paying for indies at all. Interesting because it is pretty obvious Nintendo is investing money into Indies. So Nintendo already answered for themself the question: "Is paying for indie games a waster of money?" with no.

Microsoft securing Tomb Raider.

Sony securing Street Fighter 5.

Nintendo securing Devils Third.

figures...

So you finally realized that securing exclusivity of a game isn't automatically a good thing?

It depends on the eyes of the beholder.

I can assure you that Microsoft nor Sony would have given Itagaki two cents for that piece of shit.

Maybe Nintendo needs better scouts.

The idea of securing games is still positive imo.

Wii U console owners should be offended with this kind of PR from Nintendo, specially when your console have had like 3 retail games released this year AND the highest scored game from this year is an INDIE game called Runbow.

SMH...

Here on Europe they have published 6 games though: Captain Toad, Mario Party 10, Kirby RC, Splatoon, Yoshi WW and Devil´s Turd, and they are gonna release another 6 : Super Mario Maker, Fatal Frame V, Star Fox Zero, Mario Tennis, Animal Crossing amiibo party and Xenoblade Chronicles X. So 12 exclusive retail games on 12 months is not so bad.

And that comment about the highest scored game is pretty silly, we all know Splatoon is one of the best online shooter ever made and a 81 does not represent at all the importance and quality of the game right now, in fact several critics are reviewing the game again and giving it the praise it deserves. Just because Runbow is the best scored doesn´t mean is the best.

I hope you remember this for future discussions. Cheers bro.

So now you've joined the group of people who think that Nintendo shouldn't throw around cash. That's at least some progress.

The idea of securing exclusivity for indie games is pretty pointless for consumers, because in almost all cases the games will end up on other platforms eventually. Essentially, such deals with indies are not about paying to add something to a console's library, but rather about paying to keep something away from another console manufacturer's library. Exactly what Microsoft's Tomb Raider deal is for retail games; Microsoft would have got Tomb Raider anyway, so Xbox gamers gained nothing from that investment.

If throw cash means for you securing games like Devils Third, then no. Somebody should hide Nintendos Checkbook.

I don´t get it, Runbow is scored as an indie, they play in another league, they can be compared with other indie games and that´s it, because the criteria is not the same, however Splatoon is a full priced retail game and it was scored with an 81 when it had like a 30% of the content it has right now, even some critics gave it a low score because they thought the game was not going to have any longevity,  but now  we know that´s not the case and now we have like 3 times more content than at first, so the score is not representative of the game, that´s what I wanted to say.

This notion ended when indies won GOTYs like Journey did.

No it doesn´t, but i guess you agree that Gone Home is better than the 90 - 95% of retail games on PS4 just because is better scored.

Havent played it yet, but i agree that Transistor is a better game than Splatoon and the majority of Ps4 retail games.

Not Bloodborne tho.

Honestly I think rather than moneyhatting and go into a moneyhat war over indie games with microsoft is a lost cause and microsoft will always win in a bidding war.

What would be better is if they published physical releases

i.e. Top 10 NindieGgames of 2015 2016 etcc going forward. Or a Best of 2015 Nindie Games volume 1, 2, 3 etc..

At least they would get more sales that way form core Nintendo gamers who love physical discs and know that Nintendo approves those indie games as being fun and awesome to play.
