Forums - Microsoft Discussion - So, is the backwards compatibility overhyped?

Why do you buy new gen consoles?

For last gen games! 10 3.05%

New gen is for new gens! 189 57.62%

Both, but new gen more. 121 36.89%

Both, but last gen more. 8 2.44%

I doubt BC will do much to boost the X1's sales (and it doesn't seem to have done much for the WiiU), but that doesn't stop it being a great feature for those that want it.

Fantastic feature to have in the device, but I very much doubt it made any type of difference outside of a minute one.

First answer nails it.

It deserves a lot of credit regardless of imperfection.

Any criticism of it is really unwarannted other than perhaps a little overhyping.

This would have been massive in 2013. In 2015, it's .. better than nothing, but severely diluted in relevance.

But is it a good thing that it exists, and works at all? Yes, without qualification or hesitation.

I think it helps mostly in the first year of a new generation, to tide people over.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I take care of my console and never sell them off. My PS3 is still running perfectly for all my last gen games so I have no need for BC other than convenience and my PS3 is just one room away, hooked up and ready to go. I think it's overhyped, seeing as how it depends on the list that MS releases. Still, it is welcome and much better than nothing or making a paid service, like how Sony is trying.

BC certainly doesn't hurt. But it simply came too late. If it were there at launch, it would have wiped out a lot of ill will towards the console, and would make some people stick with XBox instead of jumping to PS4 (like myself, I had about 100 X360 games when I sold my X360 and bought PS4. I gave those games away)

Now all it can do is keep the loyalty of some X360 people that were planning on going next gen, but were having doubts about the systems. I doubt it is a major system selling feature.

If the mod note is longer than the post, you're doing it wrong.

It doesn´t help sales immediately but it is a wonderful fan service and the best one any console manufacturer has ever offered since I will not have to rebuy games I already bought. In the long run it does strengthen MS´s image as being for the fans, which of course can help sales greatly.

I don't see ANYTHING bad with having backwards compatibility. I think all consoles should have it.
Really, there is no point in hating this feature. because it helps every gamer

There are many 360 games i dont own so when i get the X1 i will have a chance to play them.

Some of the comments here are hilarious. Such obvious hurt feelings lol. It certainly isnt hurting either WiiU, One, or 3DS. I could even go as far as saying majority of the market wants it.
