Forums - Microsoft Discussion - So, is the backwards compatibility overhyped?

Why do you buy new gen consoles?

For last gen games! 10 3.05%

New gen is for new gens! 189 57.62%

Both, but new gen more. 121 36.89%

Both, but last gen more. 8 2.44%

Total:328

In my honest opinion, I think the feature is over hyped, and it has not really helped at all. People all over youtube and certain websites saying how great this feature is, and how it is a instant win etc etc.

Do gamers today really care about last gen games still? Are they in the minority or majority?

Fantastic feature to have in the device, but I very much doubt it made any type of difference outside of a minute one.

It's not a system seller but it is nice for all the x1 owners with 360 games... I would rather have it than not imo

BC is like having your cake and eating it too. I get to play current gen, but I also get to enjoy the best games of years past. There is nothing negative about it. If someone doesn't play old games, then BC doesn't hinder their enjoyment of new games. On the other hand though, if someone enjoys old games, NOT having BC is a pain in the ass because then you have to have like three systems all hooked up to your TV.

The launch PS3 was, imo, the greatest BC machine of all time. Hardware BC for ALL THREE generations of games. One system, 20 years worth of games to play. You can't beat that.

dude, ITS FREAKING GENIUS!!! Im playing xenoblade Chronicles now on the Wii U, wich i bought from the Wii u eshop, its an amazing game i couldnt get otherwise.

EDIT: NVM thats not what backwards compability means xD

The point of backwards compatibility isn't attracting new costumers, it's keeping the consumers who bought your system loyal to your brand. And in the XBone case, it has come really late, the PS4 has stolen the spotlight already.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

That's not backwards compatibility, you genius.

well, true, i feel stupid xD but in a way it is. but i can play all my Wii games i bought on the Wii U, and can sell my Wii. So its still GENIUS :D

its only good for the Games with the Gold program but other than that i dont find it very interresting because you need to download data from the internet and its not region free, so there are plenty of restriction on what you can play.
Its just more convenient for me to buy a 360 or keeping my PS3.
On the other hand Original Xbox games or PS1 and PS2 would make more sense to make true BC trough emulation with imrpoved resolution and video output as well as making the games region free.

Of course it helps. People hate no backwards compatibility. That's why Wii U is sales king and X1 is shreddering PS4 sales everywhere since the reveal.

On a side note, I wouldn't have bought the PS3 at launch if it didn't have the PS2 BC.

It's easy to call it overrated if your a Sony fan and forced to have a system without the features for ps4 and for the bulk of ps3. With that said Xbox one getting backwards compatible is awesome last gen lasted forever and the games haven't aged badly so for most gamers its nice to go back and play them, and for most there's alot of games they haven't played still with that huge library. It's strange how Sony started backwards compatible on ps2 and have abandoned it now. It's nice not to have my wii out and it will be great too when I can pack up my 360 . For gamers with all consoles its a God send to have backwards compatible.
