Reasoning- Ninty refuses to go head to head with the others and the things they have been saying doesn't add up to "we want to be like the others." Well I dont blame them, Ninty doesnt seem interested in a market(hardcore) that hasnt grown in going on three gens. PS2/Xbox and PS3/360 finished around the same combind figures. PS4/One dont look likely at all to break that trend. The market isnt very large to begin with. Its also highly competitive and probably very costly. Ninty doesnt have the ip or the time to compete there. By time they roll out everything for both handheld and home, its already time for next gen. They are the only ones tasked with supporting two and do a better job supporting two than the others do to support one.
NX- NX is not a single system, its multiple devices(two most likely) that share a single ecosystem. Both serve to satisfy a different market(handheld for Japan, home for west). It allows Ninty to put their all in a single piece of software, and not have to worry about whats next two years later. It allows Ninty to do what they do best, build new ips that reach new markets. No one can go toe to toe with Ninty on that. Once Pokemon, MK, Smash, Zelda, AC, 2D Mario, and 3D Mario are out you are looking at a userbase large enough to invite 3rd parties making it even tougher to beat. Ninty fans will buy both and Sony/Micro fans will buy one as their secondary device. It will be cheap because it wont need or have very powerful components due to it being mainly a handheld.
Expansion- Heres where the brilliance comes in. The whole point of this device is to free up resources. Ninty will treat this device as seperate, advertising the difference in them(the hardware). Think of it as Wii/DS being the same but both playing the same games and both offering their blue ocean strategies. NX home console has Wii Sports while NX handheld has Nintendogs and both play Mario Kart 9. This strategy ensures both markets are satisfied(home console for the west, handheld for Japan) and no droughts. Ninty fans will be pleased and 3rd parties could be attracted to such a massive base. More importantly it gives Ninty a chance at another Wii/DS gen. Ninty as said countless of times, we have seen what one piece of expansive software can do to a platform. Thats what Ninty wants, they want to safely take a swing at another Wii/DS gen. This is the safes and least expensive.
The Cons- Ofcouse this comes with cons. Software and hardware may reduce(software will most likely reduce but hardware im not so sure). 3rd party support will also have no chance at reaching Micro/Sonys level(Ninty could careless of reaching that level).
