Forums - Movies & TV - Borderlands Movie Incoming! By Lionsgate

- Producers will be Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad, responsible for several superhero films including the latest Spider-Man films

- In a joint statement, Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said,

“The ‘Borderlands’ games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”

- Lionsgate has taken a focus on video games by naming Nerdist Industries CEO Peter Levin as president of interactive ventures and games.

“Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows,” said Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

The Mad Max effect? Hunger Games coming to an end and Lionsgate seeking their next big franchise?

They better get this guy right:

Lots of potential, both for success and for failure. The humor has to be there and the aesthetics have to be close. It would be SO MUCH better as an animated film.

If they get the writers and the director of the games on the crew this could work quite well.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Could be epic, could be shit, there's really only those two outcomes from this decision.

It's hard for me to imagine how someone can screw up a Borderlands flick. Granted, I said the same thing about the Airbender movie. But still, with everything that Borderlands brings to the table on its own, you'd pretty much have to work your ass off to mess it up. I'm optimistic about this.

I don't think the story is good enough to be a movie. A cheesy animated film, short film or series maybe, but not a two hour experience with real actors pretending to be caricatures.

Sense of humor is key, they gotta nail the humor.

I've watched my son play a fair bit of Borderlands 2. I didn't really click with the story. For myself I've been playing (and loving) tales from the Borderlands. If they adapted that straight to the movies I think it would be pretty great.

Unlike TWD and GoT, Tales from the Bordelands is a game based on a game. But it is also a very story driven game with a pretty tight narrative. They could even base the character choices in the movie on the majority choices gamers have made while playing through the game.

I think basing the movie on the main-sequence games is more problematic, because RPGs don;t lend themselves well to movie adaptation IMO.

Either way, the world, the characters and the humour make for a good foundation. Just remains to be seen whether they can capture the essence of what makes Borderlands interesting in a movie. Could have, and perhaps should have, been considered for turning into a TV series instead though.
