Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Wii U games be worth more than PS4 and XBOX ONE games in 20 years?

is this even a question? Of course they will. Compare wii first party games to PS3 and 360 games. Compare N64 to PS1 games. Compare genesis to SNES games. Most wii U games don't really go down much in price except some 3rd party ones.

Definitely.

Pikmin 3 pre-owned is already at around $60.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Yes, because there are printed fewer copies of Wii U games than PS4/XBO games generally, with the exception of a few titles.

DKC TF, Pikmin 3 and probably Star Fox Zero are typical examples of games that will retain a lot of value due to how limited their print run will be/has been.

But I wouldn't expect Wii U games to retain the price as much as many Wii and GC titles have, simply because of digital distribution. You don't have to buy it physically to get the game anymore, but you did with Wii and GC games.

Don't forget the granddaddy of them all, The Wonderful 101.

Don't expect it to rise in price until years after the Wii U is discontinued.

Trust me, it's overtracked, but Nintendo actually shipped more copies than you'd expect.

Almost definitely, yes. Nintendo games keep their price a lot naturally. But anything that's lower in number generally increases in value more over time.
Games like Mario 3D World and Xenoblade X will be worth a lot in 20 years.

that is an interesting take on the affect digital sales will have on the value of physical media. I dont think this digital takeover will be happening this generation though. i think the way physical and digital is being handled right now will be the way it is handled through the remainder of the generation.

Nintendo is reporting its total software revenue and its digital software revenue every quarter. The digital share of the software revenue has climbed very fast:

One quarter of the software revenue is already digital, the digital profit share will probably be even higher: no packaging, no shipping, no middleman's cut (wholesalers, retailers), no used games market.

And Nintendo is late to the party of digital content (full games, digital-only titles, DLCs)... Sony's and Microsoft's digital share of revenue and profits is probably even higher by now.

For the whole history of gaming, games on Nintendo Platform have an higher price on average now than their respective competiting Platform. Now this is all games on the Platform, if you would only take Nintendo first party average it would destroy the other fabricants. Prices for Nintendo games this generation can only be even higher in the futur because of lower amount of copies printed + digital.

Prices could go either way... up or down. There are collectors and there are people who just want to play the game.

In the past you needed the retail version to play the game, even if you weren't a collector. These people can now buy a much cheaper digital version instead of the limited supply of retail versions.

So not only the supply will be lower (fewer printed copies), the demand for physical versions will probably also be lower (gamers+collectors >>> only collectors). Supply and demand determine the price.

I definitively see your point. But I think an interesting fact is too look back at SNES or N64 games value for instance after the release of Virtual Console. I was expecting the prices of physical copies to go down at the time. But since then the prices only skyrocketed. Retro gaming have become much more popular since then and a huge amount of people prefer physical copies over digital. Demand for physical copies of games has thus increased, even with the virtual console. Plus since the question ask about the relative value of software, the same trend that you mentioned is likely to affect other consoles equally.

Additionaly, in 20 years, someone might buy a used WiiU and look for a certain game. The problem with digital is that it reduce the "liquidity" of the games market. Games become tighted to a specific console while all physical releases can end up on the market. Finally, I noticed that nowadays games go out of prints much faster since they can still be bought digital. Hence the ratio of physical copie of games that can potentially be available on the market  compare to the total amount of console will be much lower in the futur that for past consoles.

there is no evidence that this is the case.  Lots of games have been released digitally and it didn't affect the price at all.  We've seen these games go way up in price just like all the other ones.  Maybe you should tell those people paying $300 for earthbound they can buy a Wii U and earthbound on VC for cheaper than they can buy earthbound.
