Forums - Gaming Discussion - Publishers need to focus on online multiplayer centric games or else they're going to be f*cked in the future.

GTA V is one of the best selling home console games of all time because of its single player. Its online was broken for so long and it was still selling ridiculous numbers in spite of that.

Then there's something like The Last of Us which was a new IP that shipped over 7 million units on PS3 alone because of its single player experience. The multiplayer, from what I have heard, was great but no one was looking to buy the game for the multiplayer.

Most recently The Witcher 3 sold over 6 million units in 6 weeks and that has no multiplayer/co-op.

All developers and publishers need to do is make great games filled with adequate content at the very least and market them effectively and they will continue to sell games.

What are you basing this on? Most gamers don't want everything to become online only. I disagree with you. It would be foolish for publishers and devs to focus on multiplayer only games. Didn't titanfall fall flat on it's ass? Single players games still sell extremely well.

"I am going to go out an say this and I know I am going to get a lot of hate, but I don't give a shit what people think. My opinion matters more to me than any of yours."

What a lovely start to a lovely thread.

Edit: in numbers:
Best selling game on the PS3 and PS4. Second best selling game on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

And don't say it's a "multiplayer" game. It has multiplayer, yes, but the focus is entirely on the single player.

Gurantee you it wouldn't sell as much without multiplayer. Also, are you forgetting Minecraft? That shit sold much more than GTA5 and it multiplayer centric.

Lol at people naming witcher 3 or batman. Look at Titan Fall. A new ip that sold over 5 million and more than witcher 3/batman. Also, it wasn't on the ps4 like these other games. I guarantee you publishers are seeing this. Takes less effort to make these games with a better reward. Only very few single player games are doing well, but they cost a lot more money and time. Look how long it takes GTA5 to be made or Fallout/MGS.

You really think it takes less time and money to make a COD game than a game like New Super Mario Bros U?

COD, MineCraft, Sports games and more online centric games sell/played more. And they take less effort to make. Witcher 3 sold a lot too, but it takes longer to make with less reward compare to these online games. Just look at steam stats and tell me what games are being played more. Online or single player?

Oh ok, Minecraft is multiplayer centric, therefore all multiplayer centric games will succeed and all single player games are doomed.

Im glad that you agree with me. However to add to it, main GTA titles come out twice a generation. While cod, bf, ect come out way more often. Its about what gives you the most bang for your buck in terms of investment. I gurantee you it takes a lot more money to make a GTA game than a COD game.

Are you even serious right now? The Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight just came out recently and both did really well.

You're allowed to have that opinion, but do you have to come out and be a jerk about it right off the bat? Just soften it up a bit, dude. You don't have to preemptively lash out because you're afraid of how we'll react.

EDIT:  I broke my own rule and posted something that could spark an argument, so I'll slightly amend my post and just say you came on too strong for my liking.  We're all friends here.

This is a very bad argument. Online and multiplayer games are always going to be the "most played", because people like to keep playing with others and compete forever, whereas in single player games they'll usually play through the campaign once or twice and be done with it.

Exactly my point. Multiplayer games give you more replay value, much easier/cheaper to make. Publishers have to see this.
