Forums - Gaming Discussion - Angry Birds Maker Rovio Plans Layoffs in Restructuring

- Popular mobile games maker Rovio Entertainment announced today

- Most layoffs will hit 230 employees in Finland, but will take place worldwide, except the teams in US and Canada working in the Angry Birds movie coming in next May

- company will restructure aiming to focus on three core activities of games, media and consumer products

- spokeswoman Kaisu Karvala said:

"This is, of course, the saddest day in the history of Rovio," "But it also means we'll be focusing in the future only on the business sectors we believe in."

- CEO Pekka Rantala said Rovio's new game, Angry Birds 2, had been downloaded nearly 50 million times since its July 30 launch.

"While we have gathered good momentum this year ... fundamental changes are needed to ensure Rovio succeeds in its global ambitions to be the leading entertainment company with mobile games at its heart," Rantala said. "It is certain that a leaner and more agile Rovio is absolutely necessary to move forward and take the company to new successes in the future."

So much for Angry Birds being the next Mario.... LOL.

Sucks for the folks laid off though.

Laying off 1/3 of your workforce points to big internal problems.

EDIT: Profit margin > sales...?

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Guess a trillion downloads wasn't enough...

Wow. Never hear stuff like this at Nintendo. And they said Angry Birds would take out Mario and the 3DS. Get real.

I really wonder if this will still be relevant in five years.

Angry Birds is as ubiquitous as gaming franchises get. At this point they need to make something else.

This was so obvious long time ago. Angry Birds got milked hard and fatigue build up fast. Rovio tried to keep up massive growth but it did not happen.

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.

What are they trying to accomplish by firing 1/3 of their employee's? Also I'm 80% sure that the guys behind the Angry Birds movie are next.

Maybe If the movie flops angry birds will be gone for good?
