Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Gears of War Ultimate Edition Review Thread - Meta 82

Polygon- 8

The result is something that doesn't feel new, exactly, but it does feel surprisingly relevant. Gears of War's campaign has some small particulars that could derail a worse game, and its flaws are more clear now than they were nine years ago. but Gears of War's bonafides as a shooter classic feel less in dispute than ever — and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is easily the best way to understand why that is.

In returning to the game that sparked one of Microsoft's more prevalent franchises, members of the Coalition kicked down their own proverbial childhood door. The return trip might have revealed a few more cracks than we remembered, but it also serves as a shield for our nostalgia. And as remakes go, that's worth the journey home.

While it's seemingly cool to rip on remasters, Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition is an absolute beast and a game I'm genuinely happy to see return. If you've never played any of the series it's the perfect stepping on point, and fans will revel in getting to go back through what is a classic. One of the best third-person shooters in history? It was and still is. The proof is right here.

Microsoft has a lot riding on the continued prosperity of Gears; after all, it is one of the publisher's largest properties. Gears of War Ultimate Edition effectively reminds why that's the case, just as it reminds why this is the game that partially influenced an entire generation of gaming. It just took a makeover to help us appreciate it again.

It's a very nicely executed project that showcases just how good of a game the original is. With very few practical changes in terms of its fundamental design, it remains a thoroughly enjoyable shooter that's challenging, spins a great campaign with plenty of varied set pieces to work through, and ultimately looks and sounds great. Its characters are engaging, I love the whole ultra-beefcake aspect of the characters, and it all comes together to deliver a macho game with plenty of style and substance. Hats off to The Coalition for pulling it all together, and helping set a great standard for future HD remakes.

Kind of expected, even though I would claim this game deserves at least an average score of 90.

Not bad for a game nearing 10 years old.

Hm, I would have expected a little higher, I thought they would have at least added some points for overall value thanks to the rest of the series bein included.

I don't think this link leads to where you want it to lead.

I think low to mid-80s is respectable for pretty much any remaster. It isn't new content, so I feel a loss of around 10 points for that alone is justifiable, with points further knocked off depending on how well the less touched content aged, and if the retouched content is actually an overall improvement. Remasters scoring 90+ just doesn't feel all that right to me, personally. Save the truly high scores for new, original content that took more than a few months to work on.

Ay review below 8 is quite simply not worthy of even mentioning. The usual suspects are at play here.

Deserves at least 90 on Meta.

Wow, I really expected the score to be about 5-6 points higher, especially with the value proposition of the entire series on BC.

Deserves at least 90. Gamespot gave 9.6 to original and now 7.. Come on..
