Forums - Sony Discussion - Is PlayStation Just As Iconic As Nintendo?

I think it's less Nintendo is iconic and mores their brands are. Everyone knows Mario, Link, and Pikachu, but because those have become pop culture icons. As far as the gaming industry is strictly concerned, Playstation, imo, is far more iconic for being THE gaming console brand, particularly worldwide.

I think Nintendo is a bigger brand name, even though yes alot of people know playstation. More people know Nintendo games, and has a much bigger audience age wise. from very young to very old, and playstation doesnt have that, when people think playstation, they think cool realistic looking games that looks like a movie. Like uncharted and so on. Nintendo feels more game'ish. I dont see what you mean if playstation is more iconic, maybe for the younger teen to young adult audience, but the rest for kids , they still like mario/pokemon zelda and that stuff. so that smore iconic for them.

Sony: the console brand Playstation is iconic.

Nintendo: the company itself and some of their characters/franchises are iconic.

I think PlayStation just edges it, when people think about gaming they think PlayStation but Nintendo have a vice-like grip on handhelds which they had for decades. DS and Gameboy is firmly etched into peoples brains when they think about portable gaming. Then there's gaming character icons, nothing beats Mario.

I say PlayStation just edges it overal because of the state of play right now but if Nintendo has a strong next gen they can regain the crown.

Console wise, yes, game wise (first party)? Not by a longshot lol.

Sony's console line might be iconic, but unfortunately, Sony doesn't really capitalize and nurture older IP's, instead often replacing them, which is a shame.

which is the right thing to do, thats why i like them. I would like if they make another siren again but i wouldnt like them having some kind of mascot like masterchief and mario over new IPs.

I don't think people would mind more Jak and Dexter, Ratchet and Clank (which is coming), Sly Cooper and Crash Bandicoot.

IMO PlayStation has already surpassed Nintendo, long ago even.

Yup, especially in Europe, Playstation is often used instead of "gaming console". No matter what it is, many people call it playstation (especially the older ones, because to them Playstation is what they remember).

I don't know what part of Europe you're living in, but where I'm living, amongst most people (non-gamers included), Nintendo is still the best known of the 3.

Just throwing it out there that Link is nowhere as mainstream as Mario or Pikachu. I can't think of a single person above the age of 35 who has any idea who Link is and Nintendo was very popular where I live.
