Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft confirms Finnish phone site closure and job cuts

Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) on Friday confirmed it will close Nokia Oyj's (NOKIA.HE) former handset product development unit in Salo, Finland, and will cut a total of up to 2,300 jobs in the Nordic country.

The cuts, initially announced in July, are part of Microsoft's plan to cut 7,800 jobs globally, most from the phone hardware business that it bought fromNokia last year.

Two Finnish sites, in Espoo and Tampere, will remain open, Microsoft said.

I remember the days when all you'd see are Nokia cell phones. Microsoft has to do one of two things. They'd either have to appeal to the lowest common denominator VERY CHEAPLY or they need to start innovating. They just buying stuff up just isn't cutting it, and it's doing more harm than good.

So they've laid off over 10,000 people in the last year.

       Coffee is for closers!

Nokia used to manufacture the best phones, half of Croatia had their phones.
Sadly, Nokia got in bed with Microsoft, which managed to completely destroy them, losing billions of dollars in the process of a constant decline in OS marketshare http://www.androidheadlines.com/2015/08/gartner-android-ios-together-hold-96-8-market.html

Job well done, Stephen Elop.

Yet NOKIA WP are and were way better handsets than most on the market... And way cheaper at same quality... And the OS is way more versatile, resilient, and lasting than the competition and by far....

The main issue was the human element that is eating up the marketing tour de force apple and Samsung pulled

Jesus... What happened to Nokia. They're phones sold hundreds of millions back in the late 90s and early 2000s. What did they do with all that cash.

Yes, it's a shame MS is broke and has no money for marketing.

WP OS is crap, slow, cumbersome and counterintuitive, it's ugly to look at and has barely any apps. And those that has are overpriced a lot, and even the free apps on other systems are paid on WP.

I guess it's OK if you want some achievements on the go, but both Android and iOS are miles ahead. No wonder MS is allowing those ports on their phones, it won't be long before they throw in the towel and quit phones altogether. By far the worst purchasing decision they've made, maybe ever.
