Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Why the Xbox One is losing to the PS4, according to the guy who made Xbox matter

That's what really hurt it in the beginning of this gen but what about now? The xbox one is still getting stomped by the PS4 and it will probably get worse.

At least they're doing their best to learn from their mistakes.

not sure we can call mistake it more the player force them to change some stuff for xbox1 (they had no choice if they want to get a chance to compete)

check youtube for info (went x1 was release so many error they did like you can share your game with 10 person... etc..)

so at the end MS try to force gamer accept they new toy and gamer reply to that and force them to change thing!

was it some mistake ... NO for sure or else they wouldnt had release the X1 and present it this way if it was some mistake....

glad the gamer teach them a lesson....

At least he's honest. MS really messed up this gen. Sony would have still won the gen regardless of what MS did, but the X1 could have been doing much better than it is now.

I think most people were still sore about being exploited on 360 and treated like a second class consumers after Xbox started chasing after that Wii casual money at the expense of the core and early adopters...who were already pissed from the RROD/dvd drive issues, and 13.6 gig HD, and ridiculously overpriced updgrade options...and no HDMI or WiFi. The list goes on.

Xbox division did an amazing job coming from Xbox original to 360, then spent the remainder of the gen destroying their goodwill among consumers. They're rebuilding it now but it cost them so much. They could have been dominate console brand by a large margin. Sony was on the ropes poised to become Sega or at best, have Nintendo sales. Xbox blew it.

PS was never going to be Sega. Their systems sell always.

The Xbox brand only had a modicum of good will outside of USA and UK to start with. Then their anti-consumer policies killed off a lot of that good will permanently, making any sort of recovery outside of the USA and UK very unlikely.

Compare with PS3. The Playstaion brand at the end of Gen 6 was much stronger than the Xbox brand at the end of gen 7. Consumers were pissed off at Sony because of the PS3's price and because Sony was rather dismissive of negativity towards the price. They arrogantly assumed people would jump on PS3 at any price. But that was really PS3's only problem. Price notwithstanding PS3 was still a pretty consumer friendly device: full backwards compatibility, built in Wifi, every PS3 came with a HDD, a Blu-ray player that played Blu-ray movies, free online, and stronger hardware if you knew how to get the most out of it. This means PS3 was in a good position to have a better middle and end of the generation. Basically Sony didn't try to screw over the gamers. Even the price wasn't screwing over the gamers, because they were taking a big loss themsleves to deliver it to consumers at a barely manageable price as opposed to a totally out of reach price. Everything that made the PS3 outrageously too expensive was in principle useful to the consumer.

With Xb one, the price was pretty much the least of Xb one's problems in the time between announcement and launch. MS's main problem was that they were looking to screw over gamers with some of their policies, and when you try to force shit down someone's throat and tell them its candyfloss you lose trust completely. There is far less willingness to forgive and forget with what MS did with Xb one compared to what Sony did with PS3.

So, despite the 180, the dumping of Kinect and the drop in price, MS are continuing to reap what they sewed back in 2013, and that will likely last through the whole generation.

I don't think that's quite true. If MS had done everything right with 360 then with the open goal Sony handed MS at the start of the 7th gen Xbox could have been the globally dominant HD gaming brand. But they did stumble with the 360, as mentioned in mochachino's post. Early gen if their base sku had a HDD, built in WiFi, HDMI, and RROD and dvd drive issues never happened PS3 may have been ground into the dust, relatively speaking. PS3 could have been on course for <40 million in sales for the 7th gen if MS had executed perfectly in gen 7. And with what went down with Sony during the GFC a <40 million generation could have spelled death Sony as a whole.

I think the X1 would have taken and kept the lead in the US/UK if :

They kept the support for 360 pads/wheels/kinect1
Launched with BC
Launched @ $399 + game and no kinect.

They could have offered an updated Kinect down the line if they were so inclined, but bundling it @ $499 was a horrendous decision.

The 360 lead in the US was massive, and they totally botched it with the X1 launch. It's impressive they've recovered in the US/UK to a respectable degree, even if it came with substantial price cuts.

As for EU/ROW, they were never going to win, but their poor decisions and international marketing basically guaranteed they'd be blown out there, so that's a non-issue.

It was interesting him saying the 360 team weren't behind a lot of the decision making. It seems odd that they would put a make shift team behind the new console.

One thing that Sony hasn't seen coming so far this gen is how software will transform the X1 and give its successor a headstart in terms of BC, Windows integration, Windows ecosystem across devices and cloud computing.

It will be interesting to see how Sony respond to some of these. I still think Sony need to partner with Google as they are behind it terms of expertise when it comes to software.

There is little to respond to the Windows integration/ecosystem since they are a response to the PlayStation/Xperia ecosytem. And let's not forget that Sony like with PS Now may add Remote Play to any device if only they want to. Smart television, all Android phones, iOS, Windows, OS X, you name it. It's just a matter of writing a small client application for each one. Or just open up the Xperia app to all Android. But apparently they don't care.

Instead it would be about time for Sony to deliver the rumored PSOne and PS2 emulators at 1080p. Hopefully supporting the physical discs as well (they could even introduce trophies for the digital versions, since they have a patent for it). They won't fix the ugly graphics of games like FF VII, but there is the remaster (and then the remake) coming for that.
