Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rumour: Xbox One mini to launch in October. To drop the blu-ray drive?

Its not just Microsoft’s Windows phones which are overdue for an upgrade.  Its Surface Pro 3 was launched more than a year ago, in June 2014, and its Microsoft Band will also be one year old in October this year.

Now Chinese blog WPDang reports that their sources suggest we may see Microsoft launch a range of new hardware in October, ranging from the Lumia 940 and 940 XL to a new Surface Pro 4,  new Band 2 fitness wearable and also a new Xbox One Mini console.

Of the devices the Lumia 940 and 940 XL are of course the most widely leaked, but we still have not seen the final design yet, or exactly how well the pen and Iris scanner will work.

Of the Surface Pro 4 WPDang suggests it may use Intel’s new Skylake processor, and of the Xbox One Mini, they believe it may drop Blu-ray playback functionality and become a much smaller, quieter device about 1/3 the size of the current behemoth.

On the Microsoft Band 2 the least is known, but they expect design improvements that should also make for a sleeker device.

Read more about these rumours at WPDang here.

In some ways it does make sense for Microsoft to reveal their whole holiday catalogue at one single event, much like Apple does, and moving from September gives Microsoft some distance from Apple’s event, though October is getting somewhat late. What do our readers think? Let us know below.

Update: The Verge’s Tom Warren has confirmed much of the rumour, except for the smaller version of the Xbox One. Seems October will be interesting after all.

Does that mean it's digital only?

It would appear so.

Not sure how many people would want to lock themselves into digital only.

1/3 of the size of the current? Even without the blu-ray drive, would that really be doable?

Fuck that shit... I don't want a gimped Xbone. That'll defeat the input one all in one, for me.

Probably going to roll out cable company rental boxes with DVR functionality. Maybe why Xfinity dropped 360 app support. Would gladly rent one of these over the normal crappy ones.

I'm all for digital if downloads would not take 2-3 hours.

I don't see this happening. Download speeds so far aren't acceptable on game consoles. And if it does happen, it won't have a good impact. The normal Xbox One is selling well by itself. Why make something people aren't asking for?

I´m already locked.

On my PC and all my Xone games that I care to play.

There is only a few situations I would want to use Blu Ray for some special movies colections.

Any way, I think it might be too soon for the XOne mini. But it will come in the next couple of years.

After drinking some Hatearade, I believe M$ wants to take away any free DVD playing privileges we have. They won't pay for our DVD playback on PCs anymore and now on Xbone.
