Nintendo essentially managed to carefully spec themselves out of the AAA third party games ecosystem over the last decade and a half...

And with that, it's shown that they have no idea what they're talking about.

They're suggesting that the Gamecube's specs were why third parties didn't support the Gamecube as well as they should have been. The Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2, which "won" the generation. No matter what you think of Nintendo's choices regarding Wii and Wii U, no real gamer would claim that the Gamecube was "ignored" because of low specs.

And if they can't even get something as simple as that right, there's no value in reading the rest of their assertions (the stuff before it didn't contain any actual information, and instead was full of assumtions, so I'm guessing I wouldn't get much out of reading the rest, anyway).

GameCube released in 2001 and the hardware was finalized before then so yes it has been about a decade and a half.

2001 was 14 years ago. That's less than a decade and a half. So "before then" doesn't make it a decade and a half.

More importantly, though, the Wii wasn't anywhere near finalised in 2001, and you're insane if you think they weren't seriously considering a more powerful system for the Gamecube's successor at that time. So no, I'm sorry, but the claim is completely wrong.

Mobile being messed up, sorry for reposts lol

I wouldnt call the portable side quite healthy. There is a massive decline not only for Nintendo, but the entire market itself as smartphones become more integral to every day life. And this should be something Nintendo looks at carefully. If you ask me, shared artichetecture will benefit the console department for Nintendo more than it will the handheld side. I expect the latter to see a decline over the 3DS as the console variant grows over the WiiU (this should not be an issue at all).

Nintendo's aim will be to create profitability and sustainability by targetting their core fanbase and slowly building from there. But I do think they will face severe challenges.

Ultimately, until Nintendo shares with us what NX really is, it is hard to truly gauge what challenges they have, and what opportunities they are offered. It is one think to have a speculative understanding of the NX, it is another if that info is true but bolstered with how they deliver other info like software etc.

a shared lineup is obviously good, but it begs the question: if you dont own a 3DS or WiiU at this point, would a shared lineup really be that big of a deal to you?

Smartphones in the end will be no different to the portable market then what PCs are to the home console market as in the end it never fully replaced what it competes with only difference is that PCs have easy means to overcome any difference in interface, 3DS will most likely finish its LT with around 70m sales which is well in line with what any of their handhelds outside of the DS has sold indicating that as a whole the portable market has never really declined to begin with and has remained consistent.

A better and less speculative than I expected, not bad.

I agree on most of it.

This..

great article, i agree.
IMO, looking at the nvidia shield console, doubling the wii U power with ARM and 100$ cheaper(also, consuming even less energy), i think they can do a at least XBO power level ARM console for 300$ to 350$. So, id go with ARM.
And i still cant think in a x86 handheld.

------
Let me speculate.

2 versions: home and handheld.
home: just a console. but the controller is separable in 2. You can place your mobile device in the middle of the 2 parts of the controller, and play like a handheld or wii U off-tv.(there will be an app for it), and also for simulating wii U gamepad experience for backwards compatibility, without needing a gamepad.
handheld: is a tablet and comes with the same controller from home console. If you want to play DS, 3DS games, you put the screen raised(9:16 aspect), and new games you play normally, the screen would be layd(16:9 aspect). And some game could use the screen turning as a gimick. Also, with nintendo entering on mobile market, it can separate ifself from the controller and work like a tablet for playing the nintendo mobile games.

Edit: Sorry, misread your response.

Gamecube had the best hardware design of recent Nintendo consoles which is why it recieved the most consistent support across its life since the SNES, its only fault was its mini disc drives. But the overall sentiment of Nintendo positioning themselves out of third party support is entirely relevant from as early as the N64. I'm sure they got their dates muddled but the overall points rings true

It's amazing how much information people can squeeze out of 'NX' and 'Talk more about it in 2016'.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

I don't think third party would matter as much for NX if all the first party games are released on it, Nintendo's output on portable and home console combined is actually very high each year, by what's speculated the entire library will be available on any NX platform regardless of whether you buy the home variant or portable. This means the third party the NX platform does get would actually be more then enough especially as the portable side has always been quite healthy in that department.

If we're talking hardware sales, simply having more of the same kind of Nintendo titles would not do much for their hardware. They'd still only be appealing to the 18-25m niche who would buy a home console just to play Nintendo games.
