and dances with wolves came out even before that

and Little Big Man before that?

Maybe not. I enjoyed the movie, despite it being a rehash of old ideas. Old ideas with present day dilemas added in.

it's a present day dilemma?  When did we develop a need for, and find a planet with ample supplies of,...plotdevicium or whatever it's called (clearly they stole from raritanium in Ratchet and Clank)

umm Pocahontas came out in 1995 so i guess its alittle to late for a 20 yr

More like 1595, still alittle to late for a 420 yr

I completely forgot that that movie even existed until this thread.

I think that alone says something.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

The only thing that was good about Avatar was the amazing visuals and 3D effects (for those who like 3D). So come the 20th anniversary it will be seen for the lame bit of movie mediocrity it really is, which means it has no chance of hitting $3Bn.

Also unless Avatar 2 does something equally as visually spectacular, for the time, or it has Chris Pratt in it (!?!) I don't see it breaking $2Bn. It will make >$1Bn just because. I expect to not be interested in seeing it since I really didn;t like the first one much, 5.5/10 from me.

Please! Ferngully, 1992, is the movie you're trying to think of.

I don't recall bulldozers mowing down sacred trees in Dances With Wolves.

I hope not. Honestly one of the most god awful movies I've ever seen.

Probably not. A lot of Avatar's success came from 3D hype. It's barely even talked about by people in normal movie conversation, and is definitely never referred to as a classic. And it was already re-released in 2010, but only made $33M WW, much less than the Titanic re-release. This makes me question Cameron's decision to make sequels of it for pretty much the rest of his career.

I think the 2nd one will probably make less than 1/2 as much as the 1st, unless they tap into some other hype. So, about $1B+. That's still good. Of course, Cameron is probably going to demand an even larger budget, so the return will definitely shrink. I think we'll get a 3 if 2 does make a billion. However, I doubt we'll get another one if the 3rd drops even further (I'm thinking around $600M WW.) Which means I doubt we'll see the promised 4.

All three of the sequels are being made at the same time, similar to how Lord of the Rings was filmed. We will see all three movies released.

And I wouldn't underestimate Cameron if I were you. I find it unreasonable to expect that any of the sequels could match the success of the original, but Cameron is a damn fine director and he is able to create very popular and entertaining movies. Unless Avatar 2 is terrible (it won't be because, again, Cameron) all three will comfortably pass $1B worldwide.

personally I believe you are massively overestimating Cameron, he hasn't made anything of quality since before the turn of the century. Avatar was a terrible movie that was a smash hit due to outstanding 3D effects for the time. unless he has found a new gimic for the sequels I can't see any of them being massive successes.
