Forums - Movies & TV - If Avatar has a 10 or 20 year anniversary re release can it pass the 3 billion mark?

Probably not. A lot of Avatar's success came from 3D hype. It's barely even talked about by people in normal movie conversation, and is definitely never referred to as a classic. And it was already re-released in 2010, but only made $33M WW, much less than the Titanic re-release. This makes me question Cameron's decision to make sequels of it for pretty much the rest of his career.

I think the 2nd one will probably make less than 1/2 as much as the 1st, unless they tap into some other hype. So, about $1B+. That's still good. Of course, Cameron is probably going to demand an even larger budget, so the return will definitely shrink. I think we'll get a 3 if 2 does make a billion. However, I doubt we'll get another one if the 3rd drops even further (I'm thinking around $600M WW.) Which means I doubt we'll see the promised 4.

Do people have much nostalgia for Avatar? I saw it in theaters and then forgot about it. I am trying to think of character names of quotable lines of dialog from it, and nothing comes to mind. Does it get referenced in pop culture in 2015?

You can say that for a lot of movies released in the last few years. Every few months a movie comes around and breaks a few records, and then is forgotten about instantly (Fast, Avengers, frozen etc)

As for the topic, no, no rerelease could push it to 3 Billion. The inevitable double runs etc will only be shown in limited theatres and the ''4K'' or whatever else Fox comes up with won't work either.

The max a rerelease could do is probably 10m domestic and maybe 50m international.

Avatar 2 will not break 2 billion either.

I meant Avatar shattered records, and yet no one I know refers to it, quotes it, or references it in any way.  Frozen is still big among girls and even adults I know that love Disney will say lines from it, probably the biggest Disney film since Lion King.  Avengers and its characters are massive in the boy's toy aisle and those characters are cultural icons.  At Halloween this year I know I'll see a few Elsa and Iron Man knocking at my door.  I cannot think of ever seeing blue Avatar aliens around that time.

How much do you think Avatar 2 will gross? My guess is 1.4 billion, or half of the original.

I think you choose 2 movies for your examples that don't really fit. People won't be forgetting the avengers as that series of movies are still going strong, while this avenger made less than the last and ant man wasn't big at the box office you won't see them canceling sequels anytime soon. As for frozen, it's still huge with its target demographic, and between toys and clothing it might have done even more than what the movie made in theaters.

As for the main topic, no I don't see it passing that with rereleases. You mention titanic, but that movie had more tickets sold in its run than avatar at least in the US.

I don't think Avatar is as beloved as its box office might have us believe. It would be like that Phantom Menace rerelease.

So much this. For the best box office of all time it sure has been forgotten. I actually wonder if any of its sequels will even be capable of breaking the $1b mark.

it was so dependant on the 3d stuff drawing people.  Now that everything is 3d and we all realize that it's not that great of a movie (it hardly even plays on TV and no one really talks about it compared to stuff like TDK or Iron Man or Gladiator that came out before it and made way less money).

I am Iron Man

I don't think it's ever going to hit 3 Billion dollars. Mainly since everyone's already forgotten about Avatar. At this point I think that the Avatar: The last air bender movie is actually more relevent that the avatar we're talking about.

Avatar was an aweful movie with great visuals and amazing 3D (for its time). I saw it twice, but the movie itself sucked!.

I'd hope on 2nd viewing that people could see the movie was utter trash. Only took me once

Meh, the "wow 3D" effect is dead and the movie didn't bring much else despite having a good directing overall.

The re-release and sequel will both be behind expectations.
