Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer: I honestly don't goal the team on how many units Sony sells

What a change of attitude from this

"
“This year will be the largest in the history of the video game industry, with Xbox 360 leading the charge in the U.S. and abroad,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry.”

I don't really see how that quote is relevant to what he said here, nor why it would matter even if it was a direct contradiction of what Phil said. They're two separate quotes, made by 2 different people, 7~ years apart, and each in a different context. There being a 'change' between the two doesn't seem particularly surprising, or even note worthy :p

This guy really talks too much and says a bunch of nothing.

It really does seem like that. He seems like a nice guy though.

A question for Abun and others seconding hishers post.. What is he supposed to do in an interview if not answer questions? And how does what he says translate to nothing? I thought he said plenty and I like his visions for Xbox. I'm also confused because some say he says nothing and some seem to pick up things he didn't even say "basically he's saying yadayada.."

He gets praised for all these things happening......that were happening before he even took over. Cloud, all these games nearly have been in production longer than he's been the head (All these first party games). He says the right things, 2 years down the line we'll see what hes made of instead of just talk.

"There are ways to sell consoles by losing more money on hardware and building an unnatural business construct that I'd never want to do - at the end, when people make a commitment to Xbox and the consoles they buy, the games they buy, they want to know that Microsoft and Xbox is in it for the long run. To sacrifice the long term for any short term gain doesn't make any sense."

...Sell consoles? Right, that's why they're practically giving them away for free with a Samsung TV for $500 lol. So I wonder how much money did they actually lose per sale from this?

Lol I remember this kind of partnership being done by Sony as much as MS. Buy a Sony TV get a PS3, but a computer get an Xbox 360... Here in Canada Best Buy gives an X1 when you purchase a Surface Pro but it costs 1899$. So when Sony does the same will we get the same reaction?

Yep that's how I got my PS3, BB had a promotion I wanna say around 2010 plus or minus a year where you got a Sony Bravia TV and a free PS3 and it came with a couple games and dvd's seperately as well.  That's back when the PS3 was at least $300-$400, my memory is a little shakey because I had also just bought a 360 and another TV, no promotion there just updating to flat screens and got the 360 because of a job promotion.

I like Phil, he seems like he's really trying to get the Xbox brand into a good place and I'm very happy with the console and the tons of games to look forward to.  I also don't think Xbox needs to be in first to be a success, there's more to it than being #1 as Nintendo seems to always rank last each gen except the Wii.  Does Sony have someone like Phil to hype up the PS4 or is that the job of the fanboys?

Hot air

Quite different from what they said just a year ago: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-on-xbox-one-vs-ps4-we-want-to-be-number-/1100-6421063/

So what's MSs direction at the moment? Caring about how much Sony sells or not caring how much Sony sells?

Maybe they'd be in a better position if they didn't keep flip flopping on not only their policies, but their company goals as well.

Actually I bet he is goaling his team on PS4 sales in the USA. I don't believe for a second that MS has given up on the ambition of being number 1 in the USA, and maybe also the UK. Sop basically I don't believe him. He's telling a half truth in that for sure they do not have a goal oriented at catching Sony in worldwide sales.

He says all the right things. It will be interesting to evaluate Xbox after he's had enough time to effect changes--

He already has. Kinect has pretty much been erased. Casual gaming, erased. Brand new, controller based UI coming this fall. Brand new, redesigned controller. 1TB of storage. Backwards compatibility. Complete shift from non gaming related shit to nothing but core games...

Alot of people think this guy is all talk because Xbox One isn't winning world wide. But those people obviously aren't paying attention.
