And I'm here with 500kbps and an 800ms ping...

How do you use the internet at those speeds? My speeds were hovering around 2Mb/s earlier today (hell, they still might be), and I was disgruntled by my lack of ability to stream video over the lowest possible resolution available (oh sweet, sweet 144p).

Aren't you americans already being ripped off with internet speed and prices compared to us?

Don't let Fiber be the benchmark for price. Comcast is offering 2gb internet for a whopping $300/mo. Plus a $500 installation fee . And a $500 activation fee.

Verizon is just as much into price gouging as Comcast, so don't let Fiber be your barometer for what this 10gb service will be. You will be very disappointed when you see that it's like $1,000 a month or something, instead of what a hypothetical Google Fiber equivalent would be (probably $300 a month)

Well you know just browse..... and well it streams after minutes of waiting... Yay for living in rural Canada....

Oh yeah I'm also paying for 10mbps and 115$ bucks a month...

Living in rural ireland I used to get 50-90kb/s download speeds, I remember I was downloading something on steam and was really excited to see 110kb/s once although that never happened again. Anywhere from lowest about 250 ping, to 2-3k ping quite often, to like 20-30k every now and again in WoW. The reason I bought a 360 was because my internet used to go down like 3 times a week, one time it took over a month to get it fixed, made worse by the fact that my da goes abroad on business several times a year, when the internet went down i'd have to wait for him to get home to get it sorted and he could be gone for weeks... Man I never want to have shit internet again, was bad times :(

And yet, the majority of places with high speed will still be stuck with overpriced 50Mb/s connections, and plenty of unluckier places will still be sporting satellite dial-up. It's nice hearing about these fast new connections, but until they're reasonably priced and available around me, I've stopped letting myself get excited.

This

Although I have hopes that Google Fiber will one day be widespread in usage.

Will it be stable though?

I pay for 40 mbps (seems to be reduced to 30, it's called hybrid 30 now).
Just did 2 tests, first avg 30mbps, second avg 20mbps, but check out the graphs...

Fast enough for video that buffers ahead, yet real time it's a mess.

It still goes by cable, no clue if or when fiber might reach my 12k town.

I pay for 3Mbps but it's generally right at 2Mbps.  Because streaming sucks, I bought a little program that lets me download a lot of video content.  It's really the only way I can enjoy some of what I want to watch without having to worry about constant interruptions.

You'll see. After testing, they'll release first on the market at a ludicrous price. But still, it is interesting to see the technological advancements they're achieving.

I can't wait for the day when the world is all fiber.
