Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Do Wii U owners feel disappointed?

Not really. Dissapointed I guess in how Nintendo mishandled the generation market wise, but in terms of games ... I think Splatoon and the upcoming Mario Maker are going to be two of Nintendo's bigger crowd pleasers in a long, long time, and Splatoon honestly is Nintendo's first break-out hit core IP for a console in like ... 20 years?

They'll be making Splatoon games for the next 30 years. Hopefully Star Fox Zero turns out OK too.

But at least Wii U was a full upgrade from the Wii. And Nintendo games are gorgeous in HD, it's like upgrading from coach to a 1st class seat ... everything is nicer and the whole experience is more pleasing.

I think people are a bit too hard on 3D World too. It's a very, very good Mario game, the second half is roughly on par with the Galaxy games and it's a better MARIO game than Sunshine was. DKC: Tropical Freeze is also a great game, very underrated better than DKC Returns or even Prime 3.

What I think Nintendo should do as a thank you to Wii U is have an offer where if you buy an NX in the first 8-12 months, you get a free full price game if you're a registered Wii U owner (and *only* for Wii U owners). Maybe a free VC game too.

Lets be honest too ... the Wii wasn't exactly all rainbows either. If you owned a GameCube, Nintendo basically charged you $250 for a moderately overclocked version of the same system with a controller that cost them maybe $10 to manufacture. So basically they sold you the same $99 system with a $10 new controller and took $250 from you ... and yet that's ok some how. And 2011 and 2012 were both mediocre for the system, truth be told, Nintendo *really* only supports their consoles for 4 years anyway.

The fifth year for the GCN was utterly mediocre too, so if Nintendo is just skipping that "last year" stage with the Wii U, maybe we should just consider ourselves lucky. The last year (Dec. 2005-Nov.2006) was crap for GameCube, crap for N64 (Dec.2000-Nov.2001) and complete crap for the Wii (Dec.2011-Nov.2012).

Why are you guys so hellbent on getting that extra year. It's not going to improve your overall experience of the system if its anything like the N64, GCN, and Wii's last year was (which it would be, or worse).

I will only be disappointed if no proper Mario 3D Dimensions game or Zelda U.

Yes, I am disappointed.

1) I bought a wii u thinking that it would at least have smash bros and mario kart 8. Smash bros does a great job in balancing the competitive side and the casual side while adding plenty of content. Mario kart 8 however feels like a downgrade (not only does the gameplay feel the same as the wii version, but the local multiplayer has gotten worse)

2) I bought the wii u under the impression that it would have decent third party. In 2012 this launch plan included zombiu, Rayman legends, lego city undercover, and wonderful 101. That's 4 third party exclusives!!! Not only that, but crysis 3, arkham origins, injustice, dying light and aliens were all in the works to make full use of the wii u along with the definitive edition ports of nfs, deus ex and darksiders. Now the Wii u only has a small dlc for skylanders as its exclusive third party offering ... Pathetic.

3) if I don't like a new release (splatoon, mario party 10, etc.) It's really sad that I have to wait months before another game (that I may not like) releases.

Just like Nintendo's recent e3, I had very low standards for Nintendo this gen, and even then they managed to disappoint me

MK8 wishs to play the same as MKWii.

MK8 is a downgrade.

Absolutely adored the snes, N64 and Gamecube but then when the wii came out it was quite a few years before I bought one cheap and then most of the time I was still playing gamecube games at least at the beginning. I bought a wii u at release but I've never had the value out of it that I got from earlier Nintendo consoles. It's piss-poor hardware quite frankly and I'm not keen on the gamepad at all. Yes there are some great games that I've enjoyed but the overall package is not great. I wouldn't recommend it to most people only those who are real fans of Nintendo games like Mario and Zelda because there isn't a lot else. Some of the so called great wii u games like Bayonetta 2 seem utterly rubbish to me but then I didn't like the earlier Bayonetta game.

I won't be getting a NX until its built up a reasonable amount of must-have software and if that doesn't happen I doubt I'll get one at all I guess.

I'd love to see the NX as a reasonably powerful console with beautiful and ambitious Mario and Zelda games and Nintendo competing with Sony and Microsoft again across all game genres.

What about Lego City Undercover, W101, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Tropical Freze, Bayonetta 2, Yoshi Wolly World, Splatoon, Fatal Frame, Xenoblade X, Mario Kart, Smash Bros..

Zelda U seems like a beautiful and ambitious Zelda game.

Played Lego City Undercover instore and enjoyed it but not in a must have way. I wanted to get it but it never appeared cheap.  Don't like W101. Have Pikmin 3 and its ok but not amazing.  Need to get DKTF, YWW, Splatoon and Xenoblade X when out.

Zelda U looks amazing but that's a gaming experience for future me.

As stated I don't think the wii u has the must have software than earlier Nintendo consoles had and this is reflected partly in the very low sales of the wi u.

On this thread its clear many wii u owners are disappointed and thats on a very low install base I suspect many people who bought a wii u will be hesistant about buying NX because of this disappointment.  Nintendo really have a huge job to do in getting people interested again, getting developers and publishers on board and releasing the right hardware that can fulfill consumer and developer expectations.

I'm certainly keen to see them do it though.

Unless you bought it blindly then no one should feel disappointed me thinks. In the end you only have yourself to blame if you bought a console without the games actually being there.

Not really. I went into it expecting another Wii, and it already beat that expectation. I do wish it had better Japanese 3rd party support, but the 1st party titles on the system really made up for it, at least for me personally.

Games were promised, games were delayed, games were cancelled, now games have slowed to a trickle. How could anyone anticipate this after Nintendo's success with the wii?

Basically, this. No consumer is to blame when it was Nintendo the one that failed what they promised: better third party support and no droughts because they were ready for HD development. There's no excuse for their errors, and sales has prove that.

None of that matters as long as you wait until the games are there.

I do feel a little upset at them. But if NX is powerful I will be happy to get it. I don't want to wait a whole generation to get graphically ground breaking Nintendo games. But I doubt NX will be out before 2017 so that is basically like an average generation right there.
