And how are you and me neglicting those "important issues" by just taking some time commenting on this news going on? What are you doing to help those issues?

And yet here you are commenting in this thread.

Because thats how headline news works. It gets people to ignore other issues. All people are worried about and talking about right now is a single animal. Meanwhile, this causes people to donate money, etc to causes that prevent this, instead of to more important things, like kids who never get the opportunity for a good learning experience, or women getting raped way too often.

I've seen similar posts in Facebook starting something to the effect of: "While you're focused on this, this other thing is happening." Well, I can focus on 2 things at the same time y'know. My commenting on Cecil, Drake vs. Meek Mil, Ronda Rousey, etc. doesn't distract me from poverty, starvation, rape, mass murder, and suffering. If I'm walking down the street and I stop to tie my shoe I don't forget which street I'm on.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Very happy to see it was a mistake and that Jericho is alive!

Who are you to say what people should and should not donate to? Sure the things you mentioned are more important, but that doesn't make protecting our planet and it's animals a bad cause. I think major win that there are just more people out there donating because this, I would love to believe all this money being donated would have gone towards helping kids in developing nations get an education if it wasn't for this and we could fix that problem, but I can't. Most of this money would have gone towards things that we don't need.

You can thank CNN for jumping the gun and not doing their due diligence for this rumor getting out.

Surprising, I know :p

Do you really think it is necessary to take someone's life just because they shot an animal?

The point of this story has nothing to do with a lion. Or poaching for that matter. Nobody would have cared if some poor guy from France killed Cecil. It is a story because a wealthy man from the US did it. Pepole have been saying poaching is an issue for years and years yet nobody cared until now?

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Although it is about just one animal. The wider issue is actually of similar importance. We have species on the verge of extinction. I think that's actually just as big a deal as education/rape.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Wealthy man from US + an animal we NAMED getting killed = Social Media Crusade of the Week

Lions get killed all the time, they just usually don't have a name. That, and social media has become little more than a tool for 1st worlders with too much time on their hands to pick whatever in vogue controversy is trending at the time to be outraged by and, more importantly, be SEEN being outraged about, though it will never be mentioned again after a couple of weeks. It's turning us all into people with the temperament, focus, and face value understanding of toddlers.

I once thought social media might actually assist in the long process of bringing the world closer together through cultural understanding enhanced by this new form of communication. At this point I feel it's more likely that the negatives outweigh the positives. Perhaps my view is shrouded by just how obnoxious it's become... I've just grown to despise it for anything outside of keeping in contact with friends, family, and hobbies.

I doubt wealth had much to do with it starting to gain traction on social media, this isn't the first time a wealthy man from the US has gone trophy hunting, not at all unfortunately. The deal is, a man from the US (making this feel close to home) bribed officials to let him illegally hunt a loin, and the loin just so happened to be an icon of Hwange National Park. I believe this is the first time that chain of events has occurred, it's a perfect story for social media.

Anyway I don't see how what your trying to say changes anything, does it matter where the person comes from and his wealth status as long as it helps cause some changes? I personally don't believe so. Does it suck it took so long for people to acknowledge this on a large scale? Sure does, I've long been promoting this cause and trying to do what little I can to help end poaching and unethical hunting and I can't stand how little people seem to care. To see people finally at least pretend to care about something other than whether a dress is this color or that color is great.
