And why is that?
Because on the PC multiplayer is free?
I'm actually really curious as to why it's such a big thing for companies to charge for access on their own online platform.

No, because they pulled the rest of the console gaming community into the same mess and did so with a smile on their face. And yes I know that it's free on Wii U and PC, but I don't wanna game on PC and the Wii U isn't getting 90% of the games that are coming out (not to mention I don't wanna miss Sonys first party titles).
I wouldn't even be so annoyed by it if people ever at least showed some disgruntlement over having to pay for that shit but instead all I ever saw was talk about how it's totally worth the money and how they are happy to pay for it and "hurr durr PSN down, I guess you get what you pay for".
Anyway thanks to that I will now have to pay extra just to play UC4 multiplayer when the time comes and that pisses me off.

I wasn't really against XBox Gold originally and I can't say I've ever been against PSN being pay-to-play. The way I see it, it's not different from MMO subscriptions - that caused a bit of a mess orignally, as I remember gaming articles at the time -. Sony and Microsoft own two online platforms and they are charging customers for access to it...nothing fundamentally WRONG with that.
I do agree, however, that paying for a game and then needing to pay again for access to a part of it is pretty much bullshit...but I, for one, can't really see a way around it immediately. Either games get cheaper so that you only pay up front for SP and pay later for MP - and Sony / MS take their cuts -...orrrr, I dunno.
It's hard to argue against PSN being pay to use honestly. If you paid for JUST MP, then yeah...understandable. But you get your free morsels and you get some discounts that are actually quite good at times. You may not see the value for yourself, but it's undeniable for quite a lot of people. I've played enough hours for those 40 GBP per year to fully cover the entry price and then a lot more.
I won't deny you're right...I just see that there are two sides to this argument. You just happen to be in a minority.
