No wonder you're so negative towards other games. You need to expand your horizons man!

My taste is better than yours.

You've played a fantastic trilogy, but there are a lot more that you should try, if you have a PS3 or X360 (even a gaming PC) I highly recommend Mass Effect Trilogy.

Super Mario Bros. was actually a quadrilogy tetralogy. Super Mario World was called Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan.

Soooo... Actual trilogies, huh? Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever actually completed an entire actual series that was a true trilogy. I still haven't sat down and played the whole Metroid Prime Trilogy. I plan on getting the Nathan Drake Collection, but Uncharted is about to not be a trilogy come next year. Halo was a trilogy at one point but now it has a fifth game coming out in less than three months. I only ever played the first two 8-bit Ninja Gaiden games. I never finished Mass Effect because I didn't like the gameplay, so I never even touched 2 & 3 (plus there's a fourth game coming so ME won't be a trilogy for long). I've only played part of God of War 1 (or was it 2?). The 16-bit Sonic games may or may not be a trilogy depending on if you count Sonic & Knuckles as the fourth game or merely an expansion or whatever to Sonic 3, but I did play all four of them.

Mass Effect 2 fixes all the gameplay problems of Mass Effect 1, and 3 gets even better (gameplay wise). I highly recomment giving MAss Effect 2 a try and see if you will like it.

#1: Mass effect.
#2: Gears of war.

Metroid Prime trilogy would be my favourite, with the Uncharted trilogy not far behind.

Solid top 3 op.

My favorites include: Silent Hill (technically Silent Hill 3 is the sequel to Silent Hill 1, but I can look past that given how good 2 was), Halo (including Halo 3: ODST because it's part of the same trilogy in timeline and gameplay), Metroid Prime (these are my favorites in the entire franchise along with fusion personally), Modern Warfare (i even liked Ghosts and Advanced Warfare so it should be noted I am by definition a cod fanboy...but to be honest the Modern Warfare series had my favorite campaigns and spec ops along with solid multiplayer....3 was horrible with lag compensation there's some things that make that my least favorite IW game for multiplayer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJOpFCCnv0E, but overall it's still fun and had a good campaign),  Ratchet and Clank trilogy (I thought the series went way downhill with deadlocked and later iterations, up your arsenal was actually my favorite), jak trilogy (first game being my favorite, 3 was a little down in terms of quality because it was too similar to 2 but it was still good), uncharted (don't own it, but i have played a bunch of it at college and i can see why people consider it so good) *off top of my head. comment may be poorly written and organized

tl;dr Silent Hill, Halo, Modern Warfare, Metroid Prime, Ratchet + Clank, Jak + Daxter, Uncharted, Mass Effect

Note: If we pretend Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim is a trilogy it would be in my top 3.

Good. The combat mechanics in ME1 felt so clunky. I got about 2-3 hours into it and was thinking to myself "I have to deal with this for another 30-40 hours?" Shame, too, because the story and setting seemed really interesting, but to me gameplay is the most important aspect of a game. I may eventually sit down and slog my way through it, but I honestly could think of better games to waste my time with. At least ME was a gift.

One question, though: Do I really need to finish ME1 to really get into the story of ME2? Or are they their own self-contained stories?

I don't think that you need to finish ME1 to get into 2 (Seeing as how in PS3 almost everyone that beat ME2 at it's release liked it even though ME1 was not on PS3 at the time), but it would make it better and you will understand a few stuff more, I recommend beating ME1 then playing 2, but if you don't want to go through it all, just read it's story online (Mass effect wiki is a good place) just to better understand it.
