Forums - Nintendo Discussion - IGN: Becoming a dad brought me back to Nintendo

Awesome story, loved reading it. I don't have kids yet (maybe someday), but my nieces and nephews and I bond over Nintendo games and it really brought us closer together even though we live so far apart. That charm and magic Nintendo has will never die.

Thanks for sharing.

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

There's nothing wrong with raising children on old and more sophisticated stories like Shakespeare, folk tales, and more contemporary fantasies like Tolkien or C S Lewis.  What I don't get is the idea perpetuated that it's one or the other:  seriousness or fun.  Why not both?  For me, that's what I like about Nintendo as a whole.  I can go from Kirby to Smash to Xenoblade to Fire Emblem.  And then I can go outside Nintendo to other games like Skyrim, BioShock Infinite, Shogun 2 Total War.  There's no need to limit a child's experience to only "serious" stuff.  There's value in relaxing - and yes, even silly - fun.

As long as is not Dream land 3, 64 and everything from Canvas Curse and on, I guess it's okay for a kid. Too much soul battles :P

Unfortunate that his kids will either gravitate to smartphone and PS4/X1 gaming as they grow older.

I have a nephew who loves Nintendo and is learning to read...
We constantly give him books, but as soon as money isn't so tight (the struggle is real or whatever), I intend to pick him up copies of ALBW, Pokemon, and New Leaf...
He can work on his reading and realize that reading can be fun...
I know so many complain about Nintendo not using voice acting, but I really appreciate that they encourage reading...

Have a nice day...

Reading this gave me shivers of anguish. That's why I will never have children or a girlfriend, it kills you as a gamer.

You're joking right?

Why should I be? The author himself says he doesn't want/have to time to invest himself in video games anymore.

Thar came from becoming a mature adult. Work and household chores eat up much of your free time you've had before, and afterwards you're generally too lazy/out of energy to invest yourself into a game. If your read the whole text, you'll see that not only was it not the wife or kid who killed gaming for him, but rather brought them back to him after his everyday life as an adult killed it before

15 minutes of Mushroom Kingdom here and there is not gaming, or at least not the definition I give to it

give them 1/2 console generations and they'll teach them also the correct pronunciation (except for Mario and his Italian saddly :(  )

It's really an amazing article :D

I love games that I enjoy. It doesn't matter who makes them. I might not like the company that makes them and I might write them off several times, but it certainly won't keep me from playing a game I enjoy.

For me the hardest part is being a JRPG fan, husband, and a small business owner. Along with an active social life I find it much harder to set aside 2-4 hours one needs to really make progress in the genre. It almost becomes a part time job of "okay, Wednesday I have no plans so can get some time in the evening, then maybe next Sunday have the morning..."

I can only imagine introducing children into the mix would make gaming time pretty much cease to exist.

Nah I do it all the time and it's not that hard. The only thing is you can forget what's going on because you go so long without playing. Honestly though with newborns it's super easy cause they sleep so much. When they get older is when it gets a bit tougher cause they can walk and aren't as easily entertained by tv yet they're to excited to be able to go around and touch things.

Honestly I feel like this guy is doing what several people do in the media and that's make parenting sound harder than it is. I have no idea why they keep perpetuating this idea. More than one child? Ok then were talking. It reminds me of the dads from sitcoms that can't get laid. I'm just like who are all these guys marrying women who won't have sex with them. Never had that issue in any relationship. Yet you watch some of these sitcoms they make it seem normal.
