Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why don't many modern games have save slots?

It pisses me off cos it makes it impossible to hunt for some trophies. I have to replay the whole game just to get to the certain spot where I can get the certain trophy? Who started this nonsense? Never mind trophies, sometimes I want to revisit a certain location in game.

Meanwhile Kingdom Hearts has a million.

I have the suspicion that most developers these days went with checkpoint saves for simplification and practicality of the approach.

Maybe they think some gamers forget to save, can't tell when there is danger ahead/when they should protect their progress and they could face a game over, be pissed at losing their progress, and blame it on the game.

I don't like checkpoint saves but I don't cry because of them either.

My example of a perfect progress saving system is the one in Fallout 3.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

cuz save slots are too old school ; _ ;

I mean why expect gamers to be able something like saveing their own games, when you can just use some auto save feature and not worry about how silly your target audience is.

If it's because of trophies, you can always transfer saves onto cloud or USB stick.

Why don't games have level passcodes anymore?

Because That's what multiple accounts on a console are for. About getting trophies: you're supposed to get them without cheating, glitching or tricks like multiple saves. If you don't you don't deserve them anyway. =P

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

It's bad practice. My kids are growing up expecting everything to auto save. When I let them play an older game they always turn it off without saving...

It annoys me greatly too that saves are specific to the user who starts the game. My impatient kids never check who is starting the game, then they can't find the right save game. I had a bunch of Minecraft worlds under 4 different users, frigging mess.

At least I haven't had the displeasure of a game that only saves at checkpoints in a while. I hate it when a game holds your system hostage until you get to the checkpoint, or lose all progress from the last checkpoint.

Anyway screw single save slot / auto saves. Sometimes I just want to save and blow off some steam, burn it all down, go on a killing spree. Then go back to where I saved next time. Game, why you so serious.

90% have chapter/level/mission select where you can visit your favourite spot within a few minutes. 9% have save slots, so you must be the unlucky one to play the other 1%.

Seriously though, which game are you talking about?

Weird, it seems to me that a lot of games have save slots....
