Forums - Gaming Discussion - WTF are you doing Square Enix...

...why are you making me like you again?

A lot of my personal gaming experience is connected with SE (Squaresoft), over the years they've made many games that I consider among my favourites, Final Fantasy 8 is still my favourite game of all time for instance (yes, I'm weird like that) but I like all the PS1 FF games and while I feel that the series got weaker on PS2, SE managed to introduce another awesome series to supplement it in Kingdom Hearts, they also put Dragon Quest VIII out on the PS2, which I consider one of the best JRPGs ever made as well.

But after the PS2 era came somewhat of a dark era for SE (at least for their japanese branch), games released and disappointed, other games were announced and never saw the light of day and some games that people really wanted SE apparently had no interested in making. It seems quite telling that SE japanese console output of the 7th gen can basically be boiled down to a disappointing mainline FF and 2 direct sequels to that game that nobody asked for. It got to the point where at the end of gen 7 I couldn't have cared less if SE went bankrupt, that's how little trust I had left in their ability as a gaming company even though at one point I had literally bought a PS3 for Final Fantasy XIII.

Now skip ahead to mid 2015 and SE has somehow managed to make me excited for their games again, made me think that they do get it after all and aren't a company run by a bunch of idiots and all of that through making the right announcements (and I know those games could still turn out poorly, but the simple fact that they do know what their fans want after all goes a huge way). It is amazing to me that the company that defined their console existence last gen through the Lightning Trilogy is now bringing:

Final Fantasy XV, the game people have wanted since it was first announced in 2006 (I know it's not the same game since Nomura left, still)

Final Fantasy VII Remake, the game people have wanted since a freaking techdemo was shown in 2005

Kingdom Hearts 3, another game people have wanted since forever

Dragon Quest XI, finally a new classical DQ game on the big screen

Star Ocean 5, a surprise after it was announced that Tri-Ace was bought by a mobile gaming company

Nier 2, the sequel to the "cult-hit" which they are making with freaking Platinumgames to fix the gameplay which was one major complaints a lot of people had

as well as smaller titles (at least for the west) like DQ Heroes and Builders or Dissidia 2 and games we don't yet know much about like Project Setsuna

to console.

Now I don't really have a real point of discussion here, but I just wanna say that whatever SE's japanese branch is doing they better continue with it, cause it sure is working.

Just you wait till you actually play those games..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Let's just hope now that they don't forever to release and localize these games.

They can still be shit after shit, no way to know it until they release them.

They realized that pleasing the fans earns them more money

I'm confident KH3, SO5 and Nier 2 won't disappoint. Can't speak for the rest
They still need to announce more Parasite Eve before I let them into my circle of friendship.

The only thing I'm excited about from them is the ff7 remake. Ffxv looks WAY worse than 13 to me, and everything else never had my attention to begin with.

personally, I still think square is just a shadow of its former self... An empty husk... Who will probably somehow manage to mess up the ff7 remake (even though all they have to do is update graphics and add voice...)

Nice to see they are coming. I hope they are as good as they look. But Square is my waifu no more, Atlus has that spot now.

The only thing missing is a Parasite Eve PS4 announcement to make PS4 the ultimate rpg platform of choice.

You can thank Sony for winning the console war rather than SE, Japanese devolopers can now risk more by focusng only on ps4 instead worrying about porting their game on xbox 360 too for western audience.
