Forums - Politics Discussion - Stephen Hawking and tech experts sign letter against weaponized AI

Stephen Hawking and other 1,000 tech experts including entrepreneur Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak signed a letter, that has been already published online by Future of Life Institute, as an effort in trying to warn against the dangers of having autonomous weapons around.

The letter will be presented to delegates of the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Buenos Aires.

Stephen Hawking said on weapons with Artificial Intelligence: "Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete [with artificial intelligence], and would be superseded,".

"Killer robots" are currently the subject of much debate and have recently been discussed by committees at the United Nations, which is considering the potential for a ban on certain types of autonomous weapons.

Just don't hook it up to anything dangerous and don't give it legs.

The threat that your rival might not refrain from pushing the boundaries of weaponry and gain an advantage over you has always lead to an arms race; it's human nature.

I don't know that any of the major powers could truly sufficiently trust the others enough not to pursue this, especially if one has a head start and doesn't fear the others.
