Forums - Gaming Discussion - Now the rumors can finally stop: NX is a home console, and not a "fusion/combination" device

Heck nintendo briefly supported both the Gameboy advanced and DS, claiming the latter would not supplant the former. This would not be at all out of character for Nintendo.

That actually doesnt mean anything, the fusion idea is that it can be a handheld and a home console. Wich is like in ONE package, developing for the NX maybe makes you develop only one version wich can be utilised by the handheld and the home console, like same architecture

how can a single game be developed in such a way that will play on (for example) x86 architecture and using the same assets for a handheld?

that makes literally no sense, I can't understand this 'fusion' concept people feel so strong for.

I can imagine a vita game running on ps4 (more powerful hardware), but how could Metal Gear V play both on ps4 and then on a handheld as well? unless we're talking streaming but that's nothing new or even what people seem to be talking about this 'fusion'

Its like the same way you stream games to the gamepad, the handheld device maybe wont feature discs themself or cards like 3DS, but more sort of a streaming device or a saving device, you save the home console games on the unified architecture and when you want to take the buss somewhere you can take out the handheld device and continue to play it, its not streaming because then you need some conenction to the home base console but all games and save points are saved onto the handheld. Like i said a unified system

I don't understand what you're saying exactly. You're saying it's streaming but it's not streaming? You can play the game that is installed on the home console in your handheld?

Can you give me an example of how you see it working in real world? I'm honestly asking, not being facetious.

ok this is all prediction, but its not streaming. WHat i mean is , that the handheld and the home console are unified, they are like one thing. Im not entirely sure how that would work , but it could work. When you pop in a game disc in your NX homeconsole it also gets installed on the handheld via digital. Its like cross-buy this gen, if you buy the Wii U version you get the 3DS version for free or vice versa, thats an example. For people who dont like to buy it digital they have to had buy the game disc  for the home console anyway so it still has the value of a physical copy,. So thats how i imagine it working

Ok, I think I understand what you mean now but let me tell you why I don't think it would work.

The form factor of a handheld allows for a very limited power output. Imagine the most powerful handheld devices right now are flagship smartphones. There is simply no way you could take the best, most expensive top of the line smartphone and run any modern console/computer game. The ones you can usually are so graphics and processor intensive that dry out the battery in an hour or so (not mentioning the fact you'd need oven mints to hold it because of heat output).

The reason why there is the need for a console in the first place is because it's the most cost effective/power gaming device that can at the same time dissipate the heat and take not be constrained by limited batery constraints.

So you're left with 1 of 2 solutions:

1- the console is so weak that a handheld can perform at the same level (literally running the same games), in which case why do you even need the console?

2- the console is indeed powerful enough to do modern gaming and your handheld is simply a screen that receives the image output from the console and takes your input to play the games (same solution as game streaming between PS4 and PS Vita).

I literally think these are the only 2 options of this 'fusion' concept. None of them is ideal, but both are possible within reality as we know it.

That doesn't disprove anything. By you definition, no game can come out on a fusion device.

But this. Is. Huge. First game officially confirmed for NX is third party. And a significant one. Wow.

That was my first thought... Very excited to see that.

From what I see in the press release, they say they are considering releasing it for NX.

さらに、任天堂株式会社が開発中の「NX」※での発売も検討しております。

Mmm. Well I hope they do. Even this is more concrete than most other news. This isn't an indie studio. This is a big publisher with insider info.

Plus I really want to play this game and, no offense, but I could really go for a reason not to need buy a PS4 in the future. I like only needing to spend my money on one platform per generation. Then again, I'm fine playing on 3DS, so eh.

What makes you so sure? Lol. It's releasing on the 3DS for crying out loud.

Reggie already said that its a home console back at E3. I dunno why people are still trying to drag handhelds into this scenario.

Yeah preferably I'd like only one home console per generation as well.
It'll be really nice if NX gets PS4 games. Especially a game like this. Not sure why they are reviewing the possibility of releasing on NX. Could be that Nintendo aren't sure about the specs yet, lack of development tools, or maybe they're just cautious about how successful the platform will be. But it's good to hear that it might happen.

It's good, at least, to hear that it's not completely turning off third parties at this stage. This could be a hint at the NXs third party offering. It will be interesting to see the first western multiplat confirmation.

With today's announcement or DQXI for PS4, as well as for 3DS and NX, it is clear and obvious that NX will actually be a straight up home console, just like all the others before from NES to WiiU.

It is not a fusion device (why make a 3 DS version), it is not Android, it is not any freak of nature...just straight up TV console.

Now, of course we cannot know its power, as we've only seen a PS4 version, but my guess is that it will be of comparable strength (a bit more or less than PS4).

Hopefully this will end all those multi device fusion nonsense rumors to rest.

But both games are on 3ds too. This does nothing to confirm what it is. Now if fallout was rumored to be coming to it we would know this was a console.

Here's me thinking you were going to prove something..
